The Justice Minister, Owen Bonnici, is in full-own campaign mode, with staff calling electors in his constituency, introducing themselves as working for “Minister Owen Bonnici” and saying that they calling from his Ministry office, and then asking whether the people they have called “have a complaint”.

One woman told this website: “My elderly mother got that phone call and her response was that she had two complaints, the first being that a government minister shouldn’t be using his ministry and staff as a campaign office, and the second that Malta has its most corrupt government ever. The person at the other end of the line just said “Bongu” and rang off.”

The Justice Minister is also promoting himself for electoral purposes using his government mobile phone, which is kept transferred to the private secretariat at the Justice Ministry when he can’t or won’t take it, and his government (gov.mt) email address.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister was revealed during the Auditor-General’s investigation into the Café Premier deal, one of this government’s first scandals, to have been using Gmail to receive information and give instructions on the matter.
