Things are getting dangerous. They’ve started to believe their own lies.

This is the person who campaigned like crazy against EU membership for Malta, and who almost succeeded in torpedoing its future.

These two have always lied for political and campaign reasons. But they knew they were lying and they did it consciously. Now, they seem to have been sucked into a power-mad vortex where they believe even the most outrageous of their own lies and factual rewrites.

What are they saying here, in effect? That it’s thanks to them all this has happened. That they are the ones who pulled it off. That rather than being completely on the wrong side of history, they piloted Malta into the European Union and the EU presidency.

It’s just unbelievable. Put amoral men into near-absolute power untrammelled by the normal checks and balances of a functioning democracy, and it ends up unbalancing their minds.
