In Zambia, the Opposition leader – Hakainde Hichilema – has been arrested for obstructing the President Edgar Lungu’s convoy of cars as it surged importantly down a highway so that the president could preside over a traditional ceremony. The Opposition leader was himself in a convoy of around 60 cars at the time.
Mr Hichilema was detained after armed police raided his family home, during which teargas canisters were thrown inside. The BBC reports on the story here.
He has now been charged with treason, with the authorities saying that Mr Hichilema’s intention was to cause unnecessary anarchy and endanger the President’s life.
