Send our Doubting Thomas to Tripoli

Published: March 5, 2011 at 3:40pm

At least John Dalli is wearing a dark suit, unlike the 1920s spiv look affected by the clowns sitting next to him at this celebration of cooperationg with Gaddafi's regime

We should send John Dalli out to Tripoli on the next catamaran. If he sees the carnage and horror for himself, he just might believe that it’s time for him to build a new network of business contacts.

PA, this morning:

Muammar Gaddafi’s forces have broken through rebel defences at an opposition-held city closest to the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

Witnesses said forces loyal to the regime of the country’s long-time leader were inside Zawiya, 30 miles west of Tripoli, after overcoming rebel positions with heavy mortar shelling and machine gun fire.

Shelling damaged government buildings and homes.

Witnesses said several fires were raging in Zawiya and that heavy black smoke hung over many parts of the city of some 200,000 people. They said snipers were shooting on sight anyone on the streets or residents who venture out on their homes’ balconies.

The city’s rebels, they said, had retreated to take new positions deeper inside the city.

“We will fight them on the streets and will never give up so long as Gaddafi is still in power,” said one of the rebel fighters.

Can’t believe that Mr. Dalli said that he cannot exclude that the film shots we’ve seen on the news could be staged.

Pro-Gaddafi tanks ‘fire on houses in Zawiyah’
    AFP

Tanks manned by forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi fired on houses when they launched a fresh assault on the town of Zawiyah, near the capital , witnesses said.

“The tanks are everywhere in the city and are opening fire on houses. I saw at least seven speed outside my house and the shelling does not stop,” one resident told AFP by telephone.

“Pray for us,” the resident said before the call was abruptly cut.

A doctor also reached by telephone said: “I am caught under the fire. I cannot talk to you now.”

The opposition website Al-Manara said 40 tanks rolled into Zawiyah and were attacking homes in the city, a key protest centre west of Tripoli where rebels and Kadhafi loyalists have been battling for hours.

Medics and witnesses earlier said at least seven people were killed and dozens wounded in an assault by Gaddafi forces.

  3. I think we should be fair to John Dalli.

I dont recall him saying that there is no violence in Libya. What he said or better implied was there could be some exaggerating by some of the media.

Time will tell the truth. I fully agree that the only solution to the situation is by trying to get the two parties concerned round a table and help them sort out their differencesin a civilised way. What is wrong with that?

Stop this carnage! We have now come to the point where no one can say that the Libyan army is fighting against unarmed civilians, The rebels are armed as well, so now it is more of a civil war than just peaceful protests, so they expect to have casualties.

For how long can this go on. I sincerely think that we should give more consideration to what J.Dalli said instead of trying to ridicule him.

[Daphne – Are you for real?]

I think that we should try to ridicule John Dalli even more, regardless of whether he’s right or not. He became a figure of ridicule the moment he spoke that “prisoner in Brussels” phrase.

      • I think this is great “we should try to ridiculeJohn Dalli WHETHER HE IS RIGHT OR NOT” now isint that lovely, I wonder what type of brain would come up with something like that. Keep thinking this way and you can be sure you are on your way……….

    • Of course “I am for real”. Do you really believe that it is better to let this killing go on and not try to have a peaceful end to this massacre?

THE REBEL PROVISIONAL GOVT HAS ALREADY suggested that it is willing to negotiate but not with the present dictator.

I am sure that if this is given the attention it deserves we will take it as a message to his inner circle “get rid of the bugger and we will negotiate with you”.

Reminded me of Churchill’s famous speech in the House of Commons, “We shall fight them on the beaches…”

May God give them courage, strength and victory in the end.

Rarely has the world seen a tyrant so cruel that he is willing to slaughter protesters who have inconveniently come between his power and ill gains and basic human rights and freedom.

They deserve all the help they can get and then some. Gaddafi does not give a hoot about international laws, decency and freedom of speech and movement, so why are the UN and NATO and EU treating him with kid gloves?

    Any ideas, Mr. Dalli?

Council declares itself Libya’s sole representative
    AFP

The self-proclaimed national council established by Libyan rebels fighting to overthrow ruler Muammar Gaddafi today declared itself the sole representative of the country.

“The council declares it is the sole representative all over Libya,” former justice minister Mustafa Abdel Jalil told a news conference, reading from a prepared statement after the body held its first formal meeting.”

These brave people in Zawija stand no chance against Gaddafi’s forces. They will be massacred to the very last child as will the rest of the freedom fighters in other rebel states if Nato or the EU do not intervene with a no-fly zone and some form of military assistance.

  11. Farrugia says:

The National Council in Benghazi has now declared itself as the sole representative of the Libyan people. The Malta government should recognise this council immediately and establish diplomatic relations with the new Libyan government.

As a Maltese citizen I shudder to think that my government still recognises the butcher in Tripoli and his shrinking small patch of land he claims to be Libya whereas it ignores the millions of Libyans over the vast territories of Fezzan and Cyrenaica and their provisional representatives in Benghazi.

I believe that if Gaddafi is given the opportunity to flatten cities like Zawiya, there will be lots of money to make from importing building supplies. But I pray to God and Allah that this will not happen.

One of the reasons why Doubting Thomas doubts is that he is in denial. He does not want to admit that Gaddafi is finished.

That is also why people like KMB and Reno Calleja want mediation: they hope that it would allow Gaddafi to remain in power.

Just finished watching Zeinab Badawi’s masterclass programme on BBC World News. The World Debate.

A high-powered panel including the Malaysian prime minister and the Turkish foreign minister matched by a first-rate journalist.

All about Islam and the turmoil in North Africa and the Middle East. What role for Islam in democracy?

In spite of all the invective against the Beeb it is still the best.

Maybe they get advice on what to air from the very same gurus that control State Libjan tv at present.
