Joseph Muscat's famous lack of foresight – again

Published: March 27, 2011 at 8:16pm

“Whatever statements are made by international organisations or other countries, the reality is that the situation will be resolved by the Libyans themselves.” – Joseph Muscat, The Sunday Times, 13 March

“Asked if Malta should take part in military intervention if this is sanctioned by the United Nations, Dr Muscat said that such a move by the UN was “highly improbable” at this stage.” – The Sunday Times, 13 March

And then he had the nerve to say that “the EU’s Mediterranean policy had failed because it did not pre-empt this wave of revolution in the region.”

He finished off the same interview by saying that it is not his role to be “a commentator in the crisis”. Incredible.

Well, at least he agreed with the prime minister on how to interpret the national interest, the Constitution, and Malta’s international obligations:

“The Labour Party believes that in any circumstance Malta should act in such a way as to respect its national interest, the Constitution and its international obligations. We firmly believe that Malta’s commitment should be that of being a broker of peace and certainly not a military base.”

Yesterday’s news. Kev says something highly original…and convincing.

    • Antoine Vella says:

They probably mean the foreign mercenaries employed by Gaddafi.

    • Harry Purdie says:

You’re reaching, Kevvy. Stay focused. You’re sinking in the swamp. Beware of the crocodiles. Suggest you stay in the kitchen.

    • As usual kev interprets and quotes as he pleases. THIS is what Jibril actually said:

“We do not want outside forces. We won’t need them. We will win the first battle thanks to you. We will win the next battle through our own means”

We won’t need them, he said. He’s referring to troops on the ground. This has been the position of the coalition and Resolution 1973. Nevertheless, I am certain that IF they were to request troops, they would be provided as Res. 1973 allows it.

So there kev. Learn how to read.

He lacks foresight, but he makes up for it with hindsight.

  3. Anthony says:

All his comments can be comfortably condensed into one word:

    ” Zilch”

  4. Antoine Vella says:

The last paragraph is typical of the waffling platitudes Joseph Muscat specialises in.

The other quotes are suitably vague to appear ‘clever’ to someone who thinks being evasive is clever. It was unfortunate for him that the UN did, in fact, make the “highly improbable” move.

The problem is that Malta’s Constitution is in direct conflict with its international obligations.

Kev, what exactly do you do for a living? Seems to me you’re running Daphne’s ‘note book’

I keep track of Maltese EU employees, all of whose phones are tapped by the Malta SS.

He’s a ‘wife man’, Troy. I have to go to Brussels soon. Will be bringing him a couple of aprons. Probably running out.

See MUSEUM-Mintoffian doctrine at work here:

“We firmly believe that Malta’s commitment should be that of being a broker of peace and certainly not a military base.”

    Translation:

    Diplomatic talks = good
    Anything military = bad

Are we a hippie commune or a sovereign state?

  8. ciccio2011 says:

Joseph Muscat was and remains a Super One REPORTER. He is good at formulating questions (you know what I mean), but hopeless at providing answers and solutions.
And as a good reporter, he avoids comment.

Incidentally, his predecessor was better at the latter. His “No comment” was so natural.

  9. A. Charles says:

Don’t you all think that utterances by Joseph on the Gaddafi issue tends to lighten the debate arising from intelligent and some not very intelligent commentators to this blog?

  10. Harry Purdie says:

The little twerp blows it again. Can ANYONE see this useless dwarf as our Prime Minister? Anyone?

Well, well, so Joey tells us ”“the EU’s Mediterranean policy had failed because it did not pre-empt this wave of revolution in the region.”

He was so good at pre-empting what’s happening in the region that he suggested Malta should ”unleash” the biggest advertising campaign ever in order to exploit Egypt’s problems and attract their tourists to come here. Mur ara kieku ghamilna hekk, kemm kien jghajjarna x’hela ta’ flus!
