Jason Micallef takes up a new career in the performance arts.
Jason Micallef was misquoted yesterday. Late in the morning he had a couple of microphones shoved into his face in the counting-hall and he told them: ‘Those boxes will reveal that there is one party that has the absolute majority of votes.’ He didn’t look directly at the camera when he said this, and he didn’t flash his toothy smile – though he never usually loses an opportunity to do so and even flashed it while his three colleagues were looking grim at Sant’s resignation press conference (you can always rely on him to behave inappropriate). Then he more or less elbowed the reporters out of the way, put his head down and moved off.
That’s what told me that Micallef, peacock-brain and all, had a good inkling of what the situation was. All I needed to see then was Falzon’s sombre expression. He is certainly not a man who can hide his feelings.
Micallef was then misquoted or misinterpreted as having said that ‘the Labour Party has the absolute majority of votes’. The word went round that he had said this, with the Nationalist Party saying that he was irresponsible and Labour supporters heading for the streets to celebrate and let off petards and, in one case, a shotgun from a roof.
But what Jason Micallef actually said, if you bothered to read him carefully, was this: the Nationalist Party has the absolute majority of votes. And he was almost right. Maybe he isn’t such a bird-brain, after all.
Landslides and avalanches
I don’t know where the Labour Party got the idea that it would win by a landslide of 10,000 votes. Some of its supporters were even claiming an electoral majority of 20,000 votes. Whichever way you looked at the situation, this was impossible. And the Labour Party, with all its surveys – which I imagine it did have, unless they were misprints – would have known this.
The surveys I knew of all pointed to an electoral majority for the Nationalist Party of no more than 2,000 votes. That’s why I kicked up an incredible fuss at home and insisted that my son ditch the last day of his conference, and haul himself back here in time to vote, no matter the expense and the troublesome connections. The Xarabank surveys, which the Broadcasting Authority refused to allow on the show, indicated precisely this narrow majority too.
The Labour Party might have had some kind of landslide with the situation at the start of the five-week campaign, but from the very start of its campaign, the Nationalist Party managed to claw back the vote. It continued to climb right until the end. The Labour Party must have known this, which is why Jason Micallef’s black circles had grown rather bigger towards the end, and Sant became increasingly bad-tempered and bitter with rage, leading to that explosion against Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando.
Alfred Sant blames it on the ‘lack of a level playing-field in communication’, and says that it’s his own personal belief. He’s right: he’s a dreadful communicator and Lawrence Gonzi is an excellent one. He has nobody to blame but himself. Some regrets might be in order here.

The pigs of change are being BBQed
In the parish square at Naxxar they are keeping up their usual tradition of cooking pigs on a spit in the street, to mark any celebration like the local saint’s day. The celebratory three pigs turning on the spit outside the Nationalist Party club have all been given names. Driving past, I could catch sight of only one of those names chalked onto the revolving spit: Jason Micallef.
Miss Miriam Dalli takes a break
She wasn’t reading the news tonight with her usual semi-orgasmic posturing. She probably couldn’t bring herself to work up the enthusiasm. I can’t say I blame her. After all, her party had led her to expect a definite victory, and she must be very cross. Perhaps she needs a Bidu Gdid, somewhere far away from politics. She’s in her 30s and this is the time to break away. Otherwise, she might end up stuck on Super One news for the rest of her life.
The Son of Daphne is no longer available on YouTube
Oh, what an amazing coincidence. When news started leaking out that the Labour Party might have lost the election after all, the YouTube video of the Son of Daphne was blocked for viewing. By this morning, it was taken off YouTube altogether. The video had been posted there by somebody from Super One.
This is such typical Laburist thinking. Feeling confident at the approach of victory and it-tern taghna, they start to hit out and attack those who they imagine will be vulnerable when ‘their’ party loses, left with nobody to ‘protect’ them. The minute they realise that it-tern is not going to be taghhom after all, they pull their horns in, behave like cowards and judge others by their own violent and vindictive yardstick.
Perhaps they imagine that the Son of Daphne will lead a crowd of thugs to beat up Miss Miriam Dalli and the Super One cameraman. They really don’t understand those who are not like they are. If I were the type to beat up anyone at Super One in the first place, I would have no qualms about doing it even with the Labour Party in government.
Gypsy Rose Parnis
Well, I must say that his plastic roses worked. Silvio Parnis was elected sparat. That says a lot about his constituency. They’d better lay in a store of antimacassars for his parliamentary seat.

I wonder if Harry is going to end up in jail now.
well its all over, and I guess the whole labour party must be in turmoil. They were so sure that this was their year : the banners at the mass meetings stating “Waslet ir rebha taghna” ,l-iljun claiming victory prematurely in almost every public speach, the grim on their faces on Sunday Morning, and so on. But the real question is : what made them so sure that they would be the winning party ? All in all i think it was just another blatant mistake by Labour. Mistakes that we’ve got used to now time after time. Alfred Sant resigned today (a glimmer of hope for labour) , but is there anyone in the MLP who has any form of leadership qualities ready to replace him? The anwser is no. So labour will end up with another pathetic leader for at least the next ten years. While PN will be busy creating jobs and moving the country forward, labour will rest , as always, in turmoil.
Hmm….I wonder if JPO will end up in jail now.. As a Nationalist supporter I have to say that he has a lot of questions to answer and so far as presented a very contradictory defence. Surely someone will bail Hapless Harry out- probably the wife.

Let’s have a clean party in government and a cleaned up opposition party too.
PN only won because of Sant’s incompentence.
A party that inspires confidence would have CRUSHED someone like Sant but instead you barely scraped through.
More than half of the Maltese population did NOT vote for PN.
A good dose of humility and serious rethinking is very much needed at this stage by Gonzi.

I think all of you should lose some of your disgusting bias and put things into perspective.

To the moderator: I can’t see how my charge is hypocritical seeing as it is I AM NOT the managing director of Gianpula. Shall I take it that two wrongs make a right?

Mod how can any development of that size in a beautiful place like Mistra ever be better than an umpteenth disco in St.Julian’s? Is noise pollution that is a bother to neighbours more important than preserving the few lovely spots we still possess on this island?
I do not think JPO has done anything wrong legally but in the same way as Harry is being attacked as being a hypocrite over rent laws in another topic wouldn’t it be hypocritical of someone who has admirably been very environmentally driven as an MP admit to be in favour of such development?
Having said this I was pleased to note that JPO has called for an end to this development and I think that all the facts must be known before he can be judged.
Now that we know about Harry’s arrest warrant I don’t see how he can go on ignoring it.
He has to face the music. Politicians should not have any special treatment, and let’s face it, he is hardly a politician – AD is a non-entity at the end of the day. Not that it should make any difference!!

I am against ANY form of development in ANY remaining green areas in the country for (and I believe you shall agree with this) I strongly believe that we cannot afford more construction sites. And this is not the though of somebody who wakes up in the morning to hug the nearest carrob tree. Just as much as I hate being touted as some form of a traitor for refusing to cast my vote to either MLP or PN. Isn’t this a pretty normal procedure in other ‘lauded’ EU countries? I believe a party (ANY party) should be convincing enough without having to resort to such offensive scaremongering tactics. I rest my case to go back to my work for I feel like I’m ripping off my employer today and I don’t like that. I am sure somebody will come charging with the next colourful. Oh well, so be it

I tried to find a direct contact link to contact you through but since I didn’t find it within 1 minute of looking through this domain I decided to just post a comment assuming you will read it.
I just have a tip for when you link to YouTube videos, embed them instead. On the right hand side of the YouTube video page there is a text box with the title “Embed”. Simply copy and paste the code in that text box to where you want to show the video and voila`! Nobody wants to have to go to another page to watch the video (including me).

Take the hunters, those most respectful, altruistic, nature-lovers, who even defend their hunting dogs’ right to hunt… Take the people who chose not to vote, thus favouring the Lejber Bidu Gdid…. Take the crowds that cheered Emperor Alfred’s fairy tales and admired his transparent New Clothes that never existed… Take the mobs, take the Workers’ Aristocracy who followed Dom and Zero and who later were to hate Malta’s saviour for wrecking the Emperor’s ill-fated rule. Now that it has become clear that the Emperor was not wearing any clothes at all, will these same faithful followers try to forget that they ever cheered and clapped at the Emperor’s fairy tales?
If Malta did not have such people, yes then the PN would have more than crushed the nonsense spouted by their opponents by getting a much higher percentage of votes.
I suggest that people like Alan compare the old Lejber times of the ‘80’s to today. I admired the fact that yesterday huge PN crowds celebrated at Spinola right in front of the Lejber klabb as if it did not exist. Was the situation the same under the Old Lejber pre-1987, when PN clubs were set on fire ? Back then the PN saved the country from civil war. PN developed Malta into a modern state to be proud of, it brought peace and healed the political divisions. PN has a great history and has always taken historic decisions. Gonzi floods us with his confidence in all Maltese and by his urge to be all the people’s Prime Minister. The PN has not insulted us with our DNA, called us stupid, abject, baxxi, oxxeni, hamalli and poured hatred on whoever challenges their views. Alan, this is why PN won again and again and again. Try to be honest with yourself.
