Soon coming to a polling-booth near you: The Triumph of Crackpot Thinking
This is the newest billboard put up around Malta by the anti-divorce-legislation campaigners:
DIVORCE IS A GREAT LEAP INTO DARKNESS – VOTE NO.
Somebody tell these so-and-sos that a leap into darkness does not mean a leap into evil, but a leap into the unknown.
And if there is something which is not a leap into the unknown, it’s divorce.
Everybody’s got it, as we have been told nauseatingly over and over again, except for us here in Malta and those poor people nailing themselves to crosses on their rubbish heaps in The Philippines.
So it’s far, far, far from being a leap into darkness.
What is a leap into darkness, on the other hand, is carrying on as we are, without divorce, because nobody else has done it before and we are floundering already. We can see the solution – divorce, which is the solution everyone else found – but we are looking for another one because, apparently, divorce is a leap into darkness and the solution we have yet to discover won’t be that.
It is down this very road that madness lies.
Alfred Sant tried to find a substitute for VAT and his government met a tragic end. I watch this government trying to find a substitute for divorce, and can’t help seeing the parallels – not just in the inevitable conclusion, but in the process and the thinking.

Yep. This time round, the result will be the cohabitation legislation instead of cash registers at the back end of cars.
Jien immexxi l-kampanja Tieg Minghajr Pastizzi.
Ahjar topponi l-Angels on horseback ghax id-dehra taghhom ukoll iddejjaqni. E u l-pates. Il-pastizzi hallihom. U jekk ikunu zghar ahjar ghax nitfa’ xi tnejn gol-but ukoll.
When in 2003 we were faced with a Referendum, the No lobby chose the slogan “Switzerland in the Mediterranean”.
This time round, the No advocates are sporting the banner of “the Philippines in the Mediterranean”.
I simply cannot figure out which one’s the worse.
Malta stands a greater chance of becoming the Iran of the Mediterranean.
Rajtuh kemm hu bravu s-Sur Etienne! Sewwa qal: se nsiru l-Iran tal-Mediterran. Daqqa Kuba tal-Med. Daqqa l-Izvizzera tal-Med. U issa l-Iran tal-Mediterran. Bravu int, Sur Caruana. Bravu hafna anzi.
Issa kulhadd jaghti capcipa lis-sur Demartino. Vera kissru lil Etienne Caruana bl-argument tieghu. (Ghal min ma fhemx, qed inkun sarkastiku).
Call me cynical, but for me marriage is a great leap in the dark. As we say in Maltese, after all, kaxxa maghluqa.
What can I say other than for once I agree with you.
Thank you for this. I saw this billboard yesterday and asked my wife to translate and she really struggled to make sense of the text.
My thoughts exactly, Daph! Thanks.
I can’t believe how so many people could be so dense. Even were we to take a naive point of view – I can’t fathom how people are hanging onto these ”truths” in this way.
Can’t they possibly whip a more sensible argument out of the ether to push whatever agendas they may have – hoping, at least, that there IS an agenda, because if there isn’t, then it’s even more tal -biki!
The question of divorce should have never gone to a referendum. Rights should not be decided by a majority of the electorate, as rights essentially protect minorities and often a minority of one, an individual.
And this is what happens when minority rights are thrown to the electorate rather than being decided by those we elect: scaremongering and exaggeration.
