Crucial songbird intelligence for Franco’s report

Published: March 30, 2012 at 9:04am

Luscinia megarhynchos/Common nightingale

Nightingales are best known for their beautiful vocal abilities. Male birds, especially, sing for hours on end each night during the breeding season.

The females select mates based on the quality of this musical performance.

Older males have improved mating success due to their larger song repertoire, which can consist of an astonishing 260 variations.

Male nightingales lose weight each night they sing.

(Thank you, Tim.)

Now Franco sings all night long in 260 variations plus one, but I don’t see females lining up to select him. Perhaps they’re at the wrong door? He still lives in Hal Ghaxaq with his mother, girls. The Marsascala (or is it Marsaxlokk?) house is just for show.

It’s Marsaxlokk. He needs it to feed the passion for angling and fishing that he boasts about.

He’s been serenading nightingales for years and still no mating has taken place, Maybe his only aim is to maintain his figure.
