Oh for Christ’s sake, spare us the cant

On timesofmalta.com, last night:

My father would have wanted us to work for his ideals, not cry for him – Mintoff Bland

Yana Mintoff Bland, Dom Mintoff’s daughter, said today that rather than tears for his loss, her father would have wanted his supporters to work for his ideals.

Speaking in a One TV interview, Ms Mintoff Bland thanked the hundreds of people who had expressed their condolences to the family.

“My father would not not want us to weep over his loss but to work for his ideals, which included his love for the workers. He hated laziness and prejudice,” she said.

Although Mr Mintoff was no longer present in body, his spirit lived on through his beliefs in equal rights, justice, equal opportunities and good working conditions, she said.

———-

Tears for Mintoff?

How about some tears for the Godforsaken mess he made of Malta as a result of his spite and hatred, his catastrophic mismanagement and his spectacular errors and his Hugo Chavez attitude and behaviour?

How about some tears for his victims, and all that they had to endure, with no compensation even if compensation could ever make up for lost years, shattered peace of mind and lost lives?

What ideals, Yana? The ideals that were so wonderful that you were never tempted to return to Malta and live under them after your mother ran away to England with you as children because she couldn’t stand to live with his terrible abuse for a second longer?

Let’s stop pretending.

There will never be another politician like Dom Mintoff. Thank God for that. May we rest in peace.

  2. allo allo says:

We spent enough time serving his ‘ideals’ and whims during his lifetime.

  3. Not Tonight says:

Good working conditions? I’m sure they were top-notch in the Dejma, Pijunieri, Bahhar u sewwi, Izra’ u Rabbi, Dirghajn il-Maltin – have I missed any (Saqajn l-Ghawdxin,?)?

And equality was so close to his heart that none of the afore-mentioned were open to females as far as I can remember. No, girls were expected to sit days on end at a sewing machine, attaching zippers to denim jeans and then resign as soon as they got married to make room for other hapless girls.

And justice? Good heavens. How can she say that and keep a straight face? There’s no shame to this woman.

i remember Moira Mintoff visiting my grandmother in tears because her husband treated her so badly – don’t her children remember that? but as they say money talks.

  6. J.Tanti says:

Your husband didn’t run away with your children Daphne because 1) your children are ugly and he is shy to take them in public by himself & 2) Because he is a chicken!! Stop being a hater u prick. I really wish you will have the worst experiences in life and become a vegetable maybe one day someone will feel sorry for you!! If you are a true woman now go and spit on Mintoff’s coffin next Saturday like you said you will do when he dies!! Now it’s your time bitch just prove yourself. Whatever Dom used to say he would do it! Just do the same. We dare you!!!!

  7. Say What ? says:

Let’s weep for the ‘Dictator’ wanna be, shall we?

  8. SM says:

Daphne its obvious that you wont shed tears for Mintoff and nobody is aking you to because even his own daughter aaid that instead of shedding tears we should work on his path. But obviously, you being you, decided to go in personally into a persons life and name Ms Mintoffs mother and famiy etc.

You talk as if there was no good out of Mintoffs ruling. Peopla that lived under his ruling stated so many good things about him including wage increase but apparently that didnt affect you because you were probably too young, so for you thats a bad thing because it didnt affect you.. what a joke xD

    You thin

  9. jeff says:

Mintoff had three enemies in this order: The Church, the British and finally the Maltese upper classes and you could arguably claim that he defeated, or at least inflicted untold damage, to all three. That being done, he turned the gun on his own class. Admittedly he was of some benefit to the country in general and to a specific part of the population in particular but the price paid for that as a dear one. Somehow you just can’t help feeling that he could have achieved all that he did – and possibly a great deal more – with far less acrimony. Maybe then we could truly have said that we have been orphaned.

You think that now in the present, people are happy with the current situation? are they happy with the amount of taxes or wages being given? NO. But I havent seen anyone being rude and offending the people involved and their families, who have nothing to.do with the situations, the way you do. The reason is that people know what respect is.. something that u lack!!

  11. Chris says:

Perhaps it was the period, perhaps it is the sentiment, perhaps the political parallels, but the first thing I thought of when I saw this report was ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina’, which, ironically, shares the same tune with another song ‘Oh What a Circus!” both from the 1977 musical ‘Evita’.

  13. Spiru says:

Sorry to be a pain, but those victims who are owed compensation, had more than 25 years to get it from the present and previous governments. The fact that they have not yet makes the pain sharper and worse. One might say you couldn’t expect better of Mintoff, but of the PN ?

  22. Someone who Appreciates says:

    Daphne,

I am in my early twenties, so, as my dad always told me, I am lucky enough to have only heard of Mintoff as prime minister, and not lived through it.
It seems a number of people here think you’re a sad person for writing what you write. It appears they would go to any length to shut you up.
However I rejoice every time you write an article of the sort. Not because it’s about Mintoff, Tom, Dick or Harry, but because you can. Every time you write something so controversial I thank God we live in a country, and in a time, where you can. The only sad thing here is that so many others can’t see this.

    Thanks!

  23. Rover says:

‘Meanwhile, Organizing Secretary of the Labour Party Ray Azzopardi announced details of the cortège, which will proceed to several places connected with Mintoff’s work, including the Macina in Senglea, Cospicua Rialto Theatre, the Strand Luck in Birgu, Radio City and the National Labour Centre in Ħamrun.’

Oh, so Mile End was HIS creation. Will someone please tell them to stop abusing him in this manner? It’s tasteless, a crime against humanity.

  27. A, Charles says:

Ms. Mintoff Bland should have used this occasion to make a public apology for the suffering physically visible (which after 35 years is still manifested in my use of a walking stick), non-visible and other great hurts that many people had to endure because of her father’s very erratic and cruel policies.

  28. Wied id-Dmugh says:

“My father would not not want us to weep’ But weep we did when he was running roughshod over all of us that opposed him and his methods. He is, even after his death, still managing to split the country in two. It would have been different for Malta and for Labour had the party not been taken over by him and remained loyal to the honourable and gentleman that Dr Boffa was towards his followers and his political adversaries.
We must all remember that the last prize Duminku Mintoff received was from Muammar Gaddafi. The title for that prize was The Al Gaddafi Prize for Human Rights, of all things, duly received by the other giant for human rights, KMB.

  29. Justin Paul Grima says:

    Catastrophic mismanagement? You’re delusional !

Whenever anyone in your family cashes a social service cheque, Mintoff will probably shed a tear for you. :)

You obviously never needed one, and that my dear, is the reason why you’re so delusional.

If you weren’t so ugly & ignorant, I’d ask for a public debate but I don’t think I could manage that before I get the urge to break your neck and send you to rot in hell, where you so deserve to belong.

May you live another 100 years to suffer with that face mami & dadi gave you :)

    So long bitch.

  30. maryanne says:

In between one tear and another, she found time to put on her jewellery before appearing on Super One. God bless her, she’s so distraught.

They should be ashamed of themselves for using Mintoff’s death for propaganda purposes.

Mintoff’s family had every right to accept the government’s offer for a state funeral. But I do believe that it would have been more in keeping with the deceased’s character to have a non religious private funeral. A commemoration by the state and the Labour Party would have followed at a later date.

  31. Brian*14 says:

Equal rights? How about No Rights, never mind them being equal? Who had the right to strike in the 70s and early 80s without violent repercussions, please, tell us who?

Justice? How many dockyard workers, civil servants, bank employees during your father’s administration could walk in their place of work with the daily “In-Nazzjon Taghna”? Explain that, if you may.

Equal opportunities? You mean to say that during your father’s administration or the Zero he left behind, everyone had the same opportunity to “buy” a colour TV, right? Oh, how little you know. Dear Yana, unlike you, I lived through your father’s dreadful years and can never forget the tragedies that took place.

  32. paddy says:

After reading the Labour programme for Mintoff’s cortege I came to the conclusion that they organised everything that Mintoff Hated – to be exposed in several Churches and band marches.

I have a doubt if he ever went to a mass in his life time exept to get married and on a day he will be transported to 4 different churches. What a shame and an insult to his supporters by Joseph Muscat

i have just spent the last 2 hours commenting on fb that i find it sad that all these people are calling for the closure of your blog or for legal action to be taken against you just because you wrote what you think about Mintoff!

These people were last year against censorship! but hey what the hell lets jump on the bandwagon and trash the blogger now! These are the disgruntled pn voters joined forces with other young labourites and showing how truly progressive and open minded they are! Please make them more angry so that they will show what hypocrites and scum they really are!

I was listening to Super One yesterday after 10pm and the Mintoff love-in was still in full swing.

A commentator (didn’t catch his name) was reminiscing how the port (or was it airport) workers were opening the baggage of the British personnel as they were leaving Malta and slipped a picture of the great leader in their belongings.

“Halli malli jifthu l-bagalji l-ewwel haga li jaraw huwa wicc Mintoff” and this crass loutish behaviour, not to mention a gross invasion of privacy and dereliction of duty, was indulgently described as a “storja helwa!”

Can’t believe I share the same planet with these louts, let alone a tiny rock.

  40. Stefan Agius says:

I am sure Yana’s acting is not for nothing. These include her nomination for becoming a PL candidate. For sure J.Muscat will reward her efforts including the payment of compensation which she did not manage to get through Maltese courts and European Court of Human Rights (http://www.maltatoday.com.mt/2008/05/11/n7.html).

As if the compensation they got by now by the PN government was not enough for a property at Delimara which they still own. Maybe it would be interesting to have these listed and compare them to those given by her father (=nothing) when he used to confiscate lands to give them as plots to his constituents.

A word of advice to all Labour supporters. Before making a heroine of Yana Mintoff just because she is il-Perit’s daughter, do think it over. Yana Mintoff is nothing but an ex-Terrorist. Before you all start flipping, and really and honestly want to know why, please read on. When she was living in England she was the partner (pogguta) of a member of the IRA (Irish Republican Army- terrorists funded by Gaddafi) and her protest in the house of commons was on behalf of this IRA. Specifically in the name of their notorious Bobby Sands who was convicted over several London bombings. If you won’t believe this, look it up. On the otherhand, judging by the eulogies we’ve been reading and hearing, it is saddening to realise how half the maltese population can be so easily duped, and how easily history can be corrupted, fed and ultimately believed.

I see that the Korean Central News Agency has not reported messages of condolences from the Dictatorship of Pyong Yang to the “Central Committee of the Workers Party in Malta” as yet. As a boy in the 70s I still remember the humiliation we felt as Maltese with his antics and tagging malta with states like north korea; the tension, fear and beatings that were carried out at the slightest hint of opposition to his regime.

22 September of each year meant vindictive transfers to those who took part in the Independence Day celebrations the previous day.

I can never forgive him for the way he shouted “GHAJN GHALL-GHAJN U SINNA GHALL-SINNA” when workers tried to stand up for their rights.

And I can never forgive him the lost years for Malta in terms of opportunities.

I do feel proud for the way we stood up to his extreme brand of socialism and in the end thanks to Eddie Fenech Adami we returned to democratic ways and most important of all to the European way of life.

Just like a lot of people were upset because Daphne wrote that article about Mintoff, my family and I are even more upset that people are mourning Mintoff and that the media isn’t shedding any light on the bad side of Mintoff, after all he’s done to us and many other families.

My grandmother owns a bar and a guesthouse in Marsascala and my dad, who worked there, was once struck on the head with a bottle at the age of 14 because he refused to give someone a full bottle of wine. He could have died, and the police did nothing about it because we are Nationalists. People soon realized this and people would frequently steal and cause trouble at the bar because of this. We weren’t even allowed a telephone or a television under Mintoff because we didn’t like him.

This is why it upsets me to see that some of the same people that caused this are running for election, and it is likely that they will be elected. Compared to the others, we barely suffered under Mintoff and yet people are praising him and calling him “is-Salvatur ta Mintoff”. This country is full of idiots.

In all fairness Ms Bland is talking about her father’s supporters.

In her comments she is not including, in any way, the thousands of Maltese citizens who thought and still think that her father was obnoxious and that the damage he wrought on his country is irreparable.

This message was passed on to her late father in the 1981 elections and that, fortunately, was the beginning of the end for him, politically.

The fact that he, physically, survived for thirty years after that national no confidence vote was of no consequence to Malta or the Maltese.

It served as his political ‘ ergastolo’.

I do not believe in hell.

I have always held that a ‘true’ life penalty is far better than capital punishment.

    Mintoff got what he deserved.

Now, may he rest in peace.

  69. Angus Black says:

How about hiding behind rubble walls (hitan tas-sejjieh) spying on lowly government workers digging ditches? A scene from China perhaps? No a scene of Malta under the dictatorship of Dom!
Of course, Yana will shed no tears – not when she remembers that soon she will be a rich lady for which she lifted no finger except when she and her sister unloaded horse manure in the House of Commons.
You still reek, Yana. You may become filthy rich, but you are no lady. You are not to blame, we know, you got it all from your [giant] dwarf father of yours.

There’s a special place in hell for hypocrites, you know.

[Daphne – Death. Why, are you planning to get me to stop by killing me?]

Imnalla kien Mintoff li gab lil Malta fuq saqajjha billi bena l-iskejjel, fetah il- fabbriki, tana is-servizzi socjali, fetah it-tarzna u l-Air Malta u tana l-medicini u sptarijiet b’ xejn. Bis-sahha tieghu ahna sirna nies ghax qabel konna qed immutu bil-guh li ma kienx ghall- Mintoff li gabarna!

    • IMHO says:

Ma gabrek xejn Mintoff ghax ghadek tghix fli-injoranza.

      1. l-iskejjel kienu qeghdin hemm diga. Anzi, dawk li ma ridx wettaq it-triq biex inehihom dak il-pulcinell li hadlu postu.

      2. Il-fabbriki li fetah ghalqu ghax fallew.

      3. Ma takx servizzi socijali. Dawk dahluhom fl-Ewropa kollha u Malta ma kinitx xi eccezzjoni. Ghandek tkun taf li hallas ghalihom Gaddafi u ta hekk zamm lil Malta taht subajh ghal madwar ghoxrin sena.

4 It-tarzna kienet hemm diga, mibnija taht il-gvern Ingliz. Mintoff kull m’ghamel hadhom f’idejh u sallabna bihom sa ftit ilu.

      5. L-Air Malta ma gietx minn xejn. Ghandek tkun taf illi kien hemm kumpanija li hada Mintoff li kienet specjalita tieghu.

      5. Il-medicini u sptarijiet ma jinghatawx b’xejn lil min ihallas it-taxxa. Nassumi li Mintoffjana sal-mewt tfisser li int wahda minn dawk li mohhok x’ser tahtaf u mhux ser taghti.

It has been declared! This afternoon, when the cortège arrives at il Monument tal helsien, Mintoff will be proclaimed Saint Domenic. The man who through the 70s and 80s made us ashamed that we were Maltese, the man who let his mob ransack The Times, the house of Dr.Eddie Fenech Adami, the man who stripped us of our dignity, the man who let the mob dictate and rule the country!
Yes, he is to be declared Saint, because all that was done, being violence, bulk buying, humiliating us with the rest of the world…..was all carried out with a Christian spirit. Malta today is proud to have its second saint.

It is true, only God can judge mankind, so for what it’s worth it…..Rest in peace

  76. Ganna says:

I heard the the cortège of mr Mintoff is passing by the building of the times of Malta and also by Dr Fenech Adami’s house to apologies when he didn’t take action that time. Ara Vera theatrin.

  77. STOP PRESS says:

The funeral cortege will make a small detour and stop for a few seconds at the top of St Paul Street Valletta just in front of the old Times of Malta buildings. Sir Elton will sing ‘Run Rabbit Run’

  78. kram says:

I watched the video clip of the funeral cortege on timesofmalta.com. Excellent background at Vittoriosa with the yacht marina which had led to the downfall of the only Labour govt in the last 25 years.

Otherwisse pathetic, very pathetic especially the group photo at the end with Silvio Parnis and Mintoff Yana, the former taking a ride on the latter, hoping to get elected off her number 2s.

I will refuse to watch his funeral and reporting on the news. May he leave us in peace now.
