What did I say about this man? Essentially Labour.

Stand back, girls. I know he’s unbelievably handsome, but don’t all rip off your knickers at once.

Franco Debono’s statement on his blog that he has been “Nationalist since birth” is a dead give-away as to how he thinks about politics. To him, it’s tribal.

It’s not about policies. It’s not about attitude. It’s not about beliefs and principles. It’s about being in a club and using that club to further your personal interests.

He may have been raised by parents who support the Nationalist Party, but his beliefs, behaviour, attitude and outlook are quintessentially Labour. One of the reasons he just can’t get ahead in the Nationalist Party, and that’s quite apart from his craziness, is that he is at loggerheads with its essential core values and its way of doing things.

Had he joined the Labour Party, he would have been in his natural element and he would have forged ahead. Also, there is far less competition there and they think craziness, authoritarianism, bullying, over-inflated egos and intolerance are normal.

Now Franco is on yet another bender, suggesting darkly on his blog that given the way the Nationalist Party treats him today, there is reason to believe that it provoked or caused the violence under the Labour governments of the 1970s and 1980s.

I also grew up in the 80s too, Stephen. How is that an excuse for intolerance, hatred and witch-hunts? And underhandedness on the government’s part, that was the point of my previous comment.

The more the PN uses the 80s as an excuse, the more my generation wonders whether it was really as bad as that. Which is not, I imagine, the effect the PN wants.

@ martha camilleri: if these people behave in this way in times of peace, then it could be they provoked too in turbulent times

Yesterday afternoon Dr Debono posted a piece about how he admired Fr Fenech Adami for saying what he said about Mintoff. I happened to be reading his blog then, so immediately posted a comment about how interesting it was to see that he admired the gentleman that is Dr Fenech Adami, and I added that I suppose he does realise that under Dr Fenech Adami his actions and attitude as a member of government would not have been tolerated from Day 1.

I suspect others made similar comments (which were not published), because 10 minutes later he deleted his entire post. Unfortunately I did not take a screenshot before he took it down.

If Franco feels like it, I could tell him how in 1976, the mob, torched the PN club next door, tried to force their way into the house to make it onto the club’s roof, to be able to topple the mast onto the street.

It all started at 4.00am, when a number of green short wheelbase Land Rovers with brown canvas tops, kept driving up and down the street, opening a volley of empty beer bottles everytime they went past the club.

In 1981, we knew they had declared victory when we heard the barman, again before sunrise, loading the TV set and spirits into his car.

    Some things never go away.

The sad little deluded megalomanic shit is imagining himself as some sort of latter-day Mintoff or Napoleon. You know., ”charismatic”, ”reformist”’, ”handsome”, ”a great orator”, ”one for the ladies”, ”ahead of his time”, ”visionary”,i’intelligent”, ”humble origin”…….

  9. Anthony says:

Is he declaring himself a double agent?

If he is not thrown out of the PN soon, I know very well who is going to throw himself out.

Franco Debono’s problem boils down to mummy spoiling him.

He was the quintessential nerd at school. Nothing wrong with that, but he consoled himself, wedgie after wedgie, that seeing he studied so hard and spent nights studying to get 100 on his form IIc religion test, he would get far ahead of his schoolmates who had a life, say like Gordon Pisani, and who didn’t get `top results` like him.

After all that’s what Mummy kept saying, isn’t it Franco, and apparently she must have kept telling you how handsome you are and how lucky any girl will be to get to cook for you, but who will never love her precious as much as his mummy!

So that would be your revenge against the cooler kids who did not get such good results, and your only competition would be another nerd, Joseph Muscat. They would not get as far as you and be far less important.

Alas, you found out what we all know already, the people most likely to succeed are not necessarily (almost never) the nerds, but the more balanced individuals.

So imagine your shock when tasting reality! Gordon Pisani attends cabinet meetings? Impossible, I got higher marks. (So you say) That one a Minister, I studied more!

All those wedgies later you realized the truth – and your whole world collapsed.

So now you are incredulous and vindictive, making an incredible ass of yourself and too shocked to even realize it. After all, Mummy keeps telling you you are 100% right and and the world is jealous of her handsome little boy.

Please do vote against the budget, because it will be worth it to be rid of your narcissistic ugly mug and your private bills once and for all and consign you to the dustbin of history.

Next PN legislature, when Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici will be a minister again, you will perhaps realize just what you have done to yourself, but I doubt it.

And please, spare us blog posts on how cool you were in school/

You are wrong here Daphne. They don’t think such traits are normal. They consider them to be assets.

Look at how they’re dealing with Mintoff’s death.

  14. pablo says:

It is time to address the matter of Franco Debono’s threat to take court action so that the “kundanna” issued by the Nationalist Party be declared null and void. He bases his claim on an alleged breach of two principles of natural justice, namely, the right to be heard before an adverse decision is made, and secondly, that no one should be a judge in his own case.

At the outset, the so called “kundanna” is no more than a rebuke. It is an expression of opinion and adverse as it may be, it is not a decision which deprives him of any social or economic right or interest. The courts cannot review or enter into the merits of the validity of an opinion, given informally or otherwise. Those who in collegium issued the rebuke merely exercised their right of freedom of expression and at law they are clearly entitled to rebuke him, as any other person may rebuke another. Their decision to issue the rebuke within the structures of a non-governmental organisation is not a decision which comes under the umbrella of the law. The expression of a personal rebuke may give rise to a libel action in certain cases but to classify it as a “decision” is simply wrong.

The case of Dr. Albert Ganado’s expulsion from the PN in 1958 was a decision which terminated Ganado’s membership. It is a completely different matter. If Debono is ever facing expulsion then and only then will the principles of natural justice come into play.

He does not even know the meaning of loyalty. If he had any guts he would join the PL pronto. Please I do not wish to hear any more of him. I have relegated him to my recyle bin and pressed the delete button.

    Dear All,

I live in London and have been for the past 5 years (holidays in Malta don’t really give you a feel of the day to day). Reading the Times of Malta, it seems to me that the political scene has turned into a soap opera rather than a house of elected representatives moving the country forward.

Apart from my shock at reading the comments on how people have reacted to Mintoff’s death (some people are even portraying him as a divine figure!), is anyone actually running the country or giving it some form of direction?

It seems to me that there is more ‘fire fighting’ than governing going on – and the opposition is just sitting on the sidelines hoping to pick up the peaces without actually winning by merit!

I do hope my impressions are wrong – it would be a pity to throw away the last 25 years of progress.

    Fingers crossed,

    Chris.
