Either that or this is a really old photo.

I cannot fail to comment that Muscat is acting like a gambling father who tells his family ‘I am on a big gamble tonight. If all goes well I will stay with you and support you. If not I will disappear and let you fend for yourselves.’

Just think about it. I don’t think I am completely wrong.

For the sake of my blood pressure, can you point out this fact please?

CONVENTIONAL NATURAL GAS AND SHALE GAS ARE DIFFERENT.

The Sunday Times’s front page article this morning is a mess. It implies that the discovery of a lot of shale gas will make Labour’s proposal possible.

The only country in the world which has the expertise and infrastructure necessary to extract shale gas is the United States. Although lots of shale gas has also been discovered in the United Kingdom, there was a moratorium on extraction because of fears that fracking (the technique used to extract shale gas) might create tremors. It is only now that the UK is taking steps to start extracting again.

The shale gas industry in Europe is still very much underdeveloped and will take long years to catch up with the USA. Extracting shale gas is a much more complex and expensive process than extracting conventional natural gas.

So why can’t we import shale gas from the USA? The USA is still not ready to export large amounts yet and if it was, there are countries which will be far better customers than us.

It is the first time that shale gas is being mentioned in this debate and I’m not sure where it came from. Journalists should carry out some research before writing this stuff.

The bottom line is that there is no way on earth that the discovery of shale gas around the world is going to bring down electricity prices in Malta in two years.

This video explains, in a very simple way, the difference between conventional natural gas and shale gas. The article underneath explains what countries will have to do to exploit shale gas reserves.

Good point. I need to ask another question. Is the price of gas in the ten/twenty-five year contract envisaged by Konrad Mizzi going to be based on an oil-based index?

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

As an expert in shale gas (yes, that too) I must wade in.

There are other countries beside the US which have developed the shale gas industry.

In Europe, there is Poland. In the rest of Europe, tree-hugging ideological reactionary nonsense science has killed the debate in its cradle.

These were the very same tree-huggers, by the way, who thought the sun shone out of Obama’s arse and that he was the Black Messiah. The extraction of shale gas on massive scales, and the consequent re-industrialisation saved America’s “ass” and saved Obama’s presidency, making it look as if he turned the economy round with eco-liberalism. Like hell he did.

Anyway, yes, I too am infuriated by the absolute tosh that is being sold as science back in Malta. For the love of god, I call upon Maltese scientists, engineers, esperti, ANYONE, to speak up. You have all brought shame upon your profession and your ridiculous titles.

Putin recently delivered a speech warning Europe not to invest in shale gas, using the environment argument. Putin (and Russia) of all people / countries! They have the worst environment record.

He wants 60% of Europe to remain dependent on his Gazprom and threaten them to cut off the supplies in the middle of winter, like he did a few years ago when the Europeans were supporting the democracy movement in Ukraine.

Putin and Russia have a huge stake in the energy dependency of Europe (central and eastern countries, Greece and parts of Italy) that he indirectly controls the bloc’s economic and foreign policies.
