“Cyprus must become like Malta”

Alfred Sant had a special chair, too – remember that?

Joseph Muscat famously sought to insult Lawrence Gonzi by saying that Malta needs to become like Cyprus (just before Cyprus went belly up).

Now former president of Cyprus, George Vassiliou, has told the Cyprus Mail today that if Cyprus wishes to succeed in financial services, its got to make changes that will bring it up to the benchmark set by “the UK and Malta”.

If this weird, hypocritical little shit is elected, Malta will soon become the embarrassment of the century.

  2. Tumas-Muscat says:

Too bad most people on this rock (especially Labour-side) don’t seem to care what foreigners think, unless it’s to their own personal advantage.

  3. Jozef says:

The chair he’s on is one of a multitude of generic copies of Jacobsen’s original. The stitching is horrific.

This is what gets to me, instead of going for authenticity, which doesn’t mean expensive, so many models to choose from, they’ll have the cheap imitation. Basta hi kless.

Labour response to this article: You see? Look! Even the ex-President of Cyprus agrees with Joseph! Qed tara hux kemm kellu ragun?

We are all underestimating how easy it is to end up like Cyprus. It will take one strategic mistake, just one, and the government will not be able to finance its debt internally (i.e. by Maltese savers alone).

Maltese banks, insurance companies and investment funds will not be able to finance it either, and we’ll have to abide by the terms dictated (austerity measures and higher borrowing costs) by international lenders.

That is how we will lose our sovereignty (not by joining the EU) – just one mistake.

  9. marc says:

If I remember correctly, didn’t Muscat say that if Malta joined the EU it would be the ‘is-salib tal-millennium’ .

  10. H.P. Baxxter says:

Someone has been asking him “Is it in yet?”. He wanted to make sure she gets the message.

It is the definition of virgin. Always on the verge but never in.

  12. David says:

Cyprus is in fact much more developed than Malta. The problems Cyprus had recently were due to the fact that their banks had strong links with Greek banks.

The GDP per capita statistics show Cyprus is faring much better than Malta. http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/tgm/table.do?tab=table&init=1&plugin=1&language=en&pcode=tec00114
