Looks like the spatulas might yet pay dividends

Matters have taken an interesting turn: John Attard Montalto might be going back to Brussels. The tendency to vote in alphabetical order (I’m sure that was a factor with Nationalist electors, too, hence Busuttil and Casa) means that Attard Montalto will be getting roughly half of Claudette Abela Baldacchino’s no. 2 preferences.

So Attard Montalto is now competing for the third and fourth seats with Joseph Cuschieri and Marlene Mizzi. Louis Grech and Edward Scicluna are clearly ahead, so two seats will go to them.

    I told you so

  2. Joanne Demicoli says:

Latest results Marlene Mizzi knocked out of the race.

  3. Joanne Demicoli says:

It looks like Attard Montalto gets the third seat. Cuschieri will be an observer for the time being…..less embarrassing.

[Daphne – Oh, but only marginally so.]

Miskin dejjem gallarija irid joqghod dan Cuschieri. L-ewwel kellu jcedi postu (kieku ghamel hekk lil Dr Gonzi, sparat kien jitla’) u issa irid joqghod jistenna biex forsi jiehu seat.

Vera qed nithassru. Mhux ta’ b’xejn qabad u telaq minn Ta’ Qali.

Hope that observers don’t speak !

  4. Jack says:

Speaking of twisted logic… Had Marlene Mizzi retained her maiden name – Cacciattolo – she would have ranked alphabetically ahead of Joseph Cuschieri, presumably pipping more votes than the latter, perhaps enough to maintain a healthy margin over JAM… unless of course the spatulas proved decisive.

My name is Aaldus Aarrhenius Aardvark. Ha! Your move, sir!

      • Nigel says:

Talking about names! Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas, Roberta MTT for short. She lost out on a lot of votes because of that bombastic list of surnames. Roberta just Roberta Metsola will suit you much better and will be more well received.

  5. Joanne Demicoli says:

From Di-Ve “distraught-looking Joe Cuschieri rushed out of the counting hall a few minutes later: the man who gave up his seat in the Maltese parliament for leader Joseph Muscat will now have to wait for the Lisbon Treaty before he can take the 4th seat.”

  6. mary says:

I am truly sorry that neither women made it to the EU Parliament. Last time there was Joanna Drake who was a brilliant speaker and this time round there was Marlene Mizzi and Roberta Metsola etc. However, though we still are dominated by five men for the next five years, in my opinion, they are a fine team. I do not know why Ms Demicoli said Cushieri is an embarrassment. Can she explain?

  7. Steve Forster says:

At least the cruise liner industry will be breathing a sigh of relief…. (written whilst humming the “Love Boat” theme tune).

  8. Dunstan says:

Interesting to see who will finally be elected. Does anyone think that Mr. Cuschieri will be able to continue his `university`studies? Among the trash I read, he stated that he is doing a ‘distant learning course` with a university that boasts Desmond Tutu and Barack Obama as its graduates.

He still has to understand what Honoris Causa graduations are all about.

  9. mat555 says:

Could it be that the pn will have two seats with two FULL quotas and the pl four seats with NOT EVEN ONE full quota?

[Daphne – Yes. Simon Busuttil surpassed the quota, as we all know by now. David Casa is almost there, and not one of the four Labour MEPs is likely to reach the quota, though there may be yet another twist.]

  10. maryanne says:

If it weren’t for the whispering campaign in favour of Cuschieri, Marlene Send-me-an-email Mizzi would have made it.

  11. maryanne says:

Does it mean that Sharon still has a job in Brussels?

  12. mary says:

Why must you always try to make fun of people? Can anyone wirte down David Casa’s credentials for that matter???

    [Daphne – Touchy touchy.]

    • mary says:

oh you said touchy – at a glance thought u said toupee”

[Daphne – Yes, isn’t it odd how many Maltese politicians favour one? Alfred Sant, Vince Farrugia, David Casa…while others just gel their few remaining spikes before considering a hair transplant a la Berlusconi. Men and their hair….terrible.]

      • mary says:

Yes, I believe you are referring to Muscat – – that was a nice one. However, some people just don’t bother to have hair transplants a la Berlusconi – now take my other half….. he prefers to be a Telly Savalas.

      • Mandy Mallia says:

        Look on the bright side:

At least none seem to have resorted to the “boot polish” look, as Berlusconi seems to have done.

  13. John Schembri says:

    ATTARD is before MIZZI.
Number one candidate A , number two candidate B number three candidate C. and the rest from top down.

    • Jean Azzopardi says:

Ah, that explains how Simon and Casa got so many votes. And I suppose if you fold the ballot in a certain way, Grech Louis and Scicluna Edward also appear at the top of the list.

  14. Christopher B says:

Apparently the highly inteligent voters that voted for this new coalition prefer to vote from top to bottom, ma jmorrux jaghmlu xi mistake jahasra. Miskina min jaf Marlene how distraught she is, you see, meta tiddependi mic cwiec dak li tiehu Marlene. As regards Joseph Cuschieri, I`m sure that even when he gets his seat, he will still be an observer, like Glen Bedingfield before him. He never uttered a word in the Maltese parliament, how can anyone imagine him speaking in Brussels or Strasbourg.

    • MikeC says:

I once received a flyer fom Joseph Cuschieri where he described himself as an “Osservatur tas-Settur Turistiku”. I remember wondering whether it meant he was a beach boy ogling the tourist ladies.

Whatever the case, he would seem to have observer experience.

He can probably put it to good use, in much the same way as the traditional character in Xmas cribs.

    • D.Muscat says:

      @Christopher B
Harist lejn ir-rizultat tal pn??? Busuttil, Casa, A, B, C allura l pn kollha cwiec ghax jekk thares lejn il-kandidati anke dawk li ma kienux eletti, bhala 1st preference gabu iktar minn David Casa inkluz Marlene Mizzi u trid tqis li kien hemm iktar voti fejn jinfirxu.

“the highly inteligent voters that voted for this new coalition prefer to vote from top to bottom, ma jmorrux jaghmlu xi mistake jahasra”.

Interesting. The even more intelligent voters who elected two full quotas went one further… they failed to transfer enough votes between themselves to be able to get a better use of their ballot. Must be all that earlier talk warning against wasting votes…

What a messy use of votes for representation.
