This is exactly the same line of action taken by Mintoff when he came to power in 1971. No Facebook or internet back then, but a similar initiative was run through the Central Office of Information, e.g. inviting the publc to put forward suggestions and ideas regarding utilisation of, say, property relinquished by the British forces.

In the event, nothing was ever done with any suggestions that might have been sent in, but it made people feel involved and it also distracted them from the chaos that was underway within the government structures.

What is more troubling is the reference to Anglu Farrugia being appointed Special Prosecutor. The appointment in itself does not bode well.

There is the Attorney General, an office answerable to Parliament, not to the government, and which has protected status under the Constitution.

Appointing Anglu Farrugia to that post, with his wel-known background in the police during the KMB years, and his crazy pursuit of “those who bought votes from Laburisti” does not augur well at all. This is quite apart from the fact that he lacks five of the most important qualities of a ‘special prosecutor’: intelligence, articulacy, a logical mind, political independence and moral fibre. The man cannot even write properly, which is a reflection of his inability to think properly.

He makes a perfect Di Pietro. That one too lacked intelligence, articulacy, a logical mind, political independence and moral fibre.

We’ll have a repeat of the past five years, only this time the opposition won’t be able to do anything with the economy.

    Special Prosecutor, hmmmm!

Will we have a guillotine in Saint George’s Square next.

  3. Wot the Hack says:

How can Anglu Farrugia be appointed special prosecutor by the Prime Minister who had asked for Farrugia’s resignation because, we were told, Farrugia had made unacceptable statements about the judiciary?

  4. Grezz says:

So very well said. And Muscat DID once say that Mintoff was his hero (as did Marlene Farrugia, in the run-up to the 2008 election, but that’s another story).

Mintoff’s tactics, Mussolini’s mannerisms, Eva Peron in tow (though we haven’t seen her lately), stirring up the crowd as Hitler did … no, it does not augur well in the least.

Special prosecutor of what? Prosecutor of PN supporters, no doubt.

Hardly a week passed and here we go again !

We will witness a 1971 re-run of the Cachia Zammit brothers persecution (not prosecution), if there is a special prosecutor working on his own.

We will be back to the Mintoff years.

If this Special Prosecutor is approved by a two-thirds parliamentary majority under the control and part of the Permanent Commission Against Corruption, and with a Whistleblower’s Act in place, let’s get on with it.

Maybe our a new justice minister’s appointment hasn’t gone down to well with some of our boys in blue? He hasn’t exactly been on the side of the angels. Maybe his position has been questioned by some in the Labour Party?

  9. Dave says:

Special Prosecutor is a role under the Whistleblowers Act that was jettisoned by the LP since they wanted to extend the protection to cover those guilty (but who came forward to rat on the others, presumably before they got caught).

The combination of name and title sends chills down my spine.

I haven’t read this piece of news anywhere though – is it confirmed?

Within what context would he be acting as Chief Inquisitor?

I don’t think Joseph Muscat should be comfortable at the idea either. Elephants have long memories and revenge is a plate best eaten cold.

[Daphne – Joseph Muscat said on TVM’s Dissett last Saturday, when quizzed by Reno Bugeja, that he has discussed both the Speaker’s role and that of ‘special prosecutor’ with Anglu Farrugia. Anglu Farrugia was also asked about it, as I recall (by a newspaper) and confirmed that he had spoken to Muscat.]

And not of word from the PN side about this latest appointment. Have they lost all their marbles?

  12. caflisa says:

OMG the Debono Grechs are back, one as a mayor, the other stands a good chance in the casual elections.

And what on earth is a Special Prosecutor? Is that double-speak for Inquisitor?

  13. Joan says:

I hope the PN starts to react soon because to me it looks like they have been sucked into this black hole called Moviment.

I do not want to be part of this Moviment, otherwise I would have voted PL.

Daphne thanks for keeping us up to date.

  14. Natalie Mallett says:

Whoever is in charge of the PN media should take a look at your blog and prepare the news programme on them.

If it were not for you keeping us updated, we will all be sucked into the black hole. Thank you, Daphne.

‘Hanging’ Judge Jeffreys of the ‘Bloody Assizes’ came to mind when I heard mention a ‘special prosecutor’.

Will he be a Special Prosecutor in MSU style?
