John Bencini: his dress sense tells you all you need to know.

John Bencini: his dress sense tells you all you need to know.

The government is supposed to appoint to the MCESD a chairman of whom all the social partners approve (doing this through consultation) – for the simple reason that if any of the partners don’t feel comfortable with or have respect for the chairman, then they cannot do their work properly, and the government will be unable to get what it wants and needs in terms of advice.

The government said that it received both positive and negative feedback to its proposal of John Bencini. But despite the negative feedback, it will went ahead and imposed John Bencini on them.

What it didn’t say is just how much negative feedback it received. It seems that the only positive feedback it got was from the General Workers Union (obviously, given that Tony Zarb and John Bencini are great mates) and from the trade union organisation FORUM, which didn’t really have any choice because Bencini was once its president.

They have, in fact, been the only two organisations so far to signal their approval in public by congratulating him. Maybe one or two more will follow suit, but in a constipated manner.

Their real worry, of course, is that Bencini, who has that type of personality as was made copiously evident by his very public scenes in favour of Labour after years of public scenes against Labour, will snitch to the prime minister on everything that is said in the MCESD.

The GWU might have been doing that already, but it’s a different matter when you feel you can’t trust your own chairman.

The members of the MCESD will know this and will consequently not speak openly. Dialogue will be stilted, openness will be thrown out of the window and horse-trading will before long become the order of the day.

Exactly not what the doctor ordered, in other words.

If it ain’t broke, don’t worry – Labour will oblige.

I can’t get over this version of change: Sonny Portelli to John Bencini. Just unbelievable. U ejja, mhux xorta.

You know what comes next, right? “Attakk fahxi fuq il-persuna ta’ John Bencini minn blogger qrib il-Partit Nazzjonalista, li ikkummentat b’mod qalil fuq l-ilbies ta’ Bencini. Sorsi qrib il-partit jghidulna li din il-blogger…” [continued until page 94]

We’ll sure get a change with Bencini – not least in attire.

  3. anthony says:

We had sixteen years of this farce so it is nothing new.

The men who get the top posts are the ones with low readings on the PL government’s orchidometer (Google).

  4. Claude Sciberras says:

First of all we should not be surprised that Labour put a union man in such a position.

First of all they are il-partit tal-haddiema and think that it is il-haddiema not entrepreneurs that should lead the business community.

Secondly they never really liked the MCESD anyway and the GWU used to be their (negative) voice on the council – would be interesting to see how they start acting now.

A phrase of yours keeps repeating itself in my brain making it difficult to sleep – A Ship Of Fools.

    So tragically true.

Muscat’s new best friend, Francois Hollande, is in deep deep sh*t. His finance minster was found to have €600,000 of undeclared money stashed away first in good ole Switzerland and then found in HK.

We all saw him on French TV swearing ‘les yeux dans yeux’ to Hollande that he didn’t have an illegal account.

Hollande had to go on state TV tonight to make a solemn announcement that he knew nothing about it.

The minister said he had been taken over by a spiral of lies and he couldn’t stop lying. This minister was the one who came up with the 75% tax on the rich.

Vive la Parti Socialiste! They always manage to screw it up very badly.

  6. dutchie says:

The jaws of the totalitarianism machine gets oiled again.

By surrounding himself with such inept puppets to fill up important functions appointed by him, Joseph Muscat keeps strengthening his own position as the Great Leader – the one they will all follow with no resistance whatsoever.

He has them all on a leash. One false move and he appoints another fool. “What the hack? Thank you and goodbye.”

The Labour Party ironically warned us about this in their (ded, I’m voting Labour) campaign ad where the mother warns her daughter that she’d be sorry if Labour won.

    • Calculator says:

Regarding your last line: just goes to show that sometimes, voting Nationalist by tradition has its up-sides too.

  7. old-timer says:

I cannot understand the surprise at such appointments. Muscat had no shame in humiliating Jose Herrera, so why do you expect him not to carry on with his rubbing salt in wounds?

  8. La Redoute says:

Snitching on MCESD discussions was probably the reason for Bencini’s appointment.

  9. Ghoxrin Punt says:

Dutchie, I don’t agree with you conclusion at all.

It is very clear that Muscat is surrounding himself with these people because he is weak and he sees his position under threat.

He knows that he has to keep everyone happy if he wants to retain his lead and be re-elected in 5 years’ time. Retaining people like Sonny Portelli and Frederick Mifsud Bonnici was just not possible because his people never consider Malta taghna lkoll.

The first crack and everything will crumble. He knows how fickle people are, including those he has appointed, who have had no qualms to slag off Labour in the past.

  10. Stefan Vella says:

Just out – Musumeci (or Consuelo) got his dues as well. Part-time consultant with MEPA.

Who’s next, Zammit Tabona or Mugliett?

  11. Jar Jar says:

I have the feeling that JM is going through the motions of rewarding those who helped the PL get elected.

Then, in 1 or 2 years’ time, they will be replaced with those that JM really wants to head these departments/NGOs/etc.

With a 36k vote advantage, he can afford to think long term. What we are seeing is only the starters – main course to follow.

  12. TROY says:

His dress sense is appalling, but then again, so is the man.
