“Anthony Agius Decelis has a family to feed” – Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, Minister for Social Policy

Published: April 4, 2013 at 10:19pm

The Malta Independent’s online edition reports today on the peasant-like reasoning of our new progressive and liberal government:

Labour MP Anthony Agius Decelis will not be giving up his employment at Mater Dei. family and social solidarity ministry Marie Louise Coleiro Preca said that it would be unjust for Mr Agius Decelis to give up work, as he has a family to feed.

Ms Coleiro Preca explained that the time Mr Agius Decelis spends at the St Vincent de Paul residential home will count as parliamentary duties.

Speaking at a press conference held this morning, Ms Coleiro Preca said that Mr Agius Decelis’ unpaid consultancy work has been approved by prime minister Joseph Muscat.

I, for one, am not at all surprised, given how well I remember Ms Coleiro as secretary-general of the Malta Labour Party in the Golden Years of Labour 1979 to 1987. She didn’t even resign when her party’s thugs shot a man dead at the PN club in Gudja. Maybe she told herself it was a scam set up by agents of the Nationalist Party to give Labour a bad name.

Are there still people out there boasting that they switched for change? Probably. With such a high level of emotional investment, they can’t very well backtrack now, can they.

This is like when you marry somebody all your friends and your family tell you is bad news for you and bad news in general. You then spend years trying to prove them wrong and convincing yourself they were wrong and you were right, until you wake up one morning and realise what a mess you’re in.

Robert Musumeci has a conflict of interest. He can’t be a consultant to the MEPA and represent clients before it too.

    • Antoine Vella says:

He’s not consultant to the MEPA. He’s consultant to Michael Farrugia who, I suspect, doesn’t have a clue about planning.

The conflict of interest is still there, of course but, you know how it is, he has two families to feed.

      • xdcc says:

I agree 100% with Markus. Michael Farrugia knows nothing about planning and has no experience of the planning system. For all intents and purposes, all important political and other decisions relating to MEPA will be taken by Musumeci.

On any one day, Musumeci will have a meeting with MEPA Chairman at 9 am, another with MEPA’s senior management at 10 am and then represent his client on an application in front of the Board at noon, in the presence of the same MEPA people he met earlier.

Musumeci has been put in a position where he can exert pressure on ANYONE in MEPA. The perception that he can use his position to exert pressure to the benefit of his clients is a conflict of interest, irrespective whether he intends making use of his advantageous position.

And in the evening you would see him participating in or presenting some discussion program.

    • Harry Purdie says:

      Conflict of interest, Markus?

This whole goddam government is a conflict of interest.

What ever happened to that ludicrous promise I remember about MPs being paid on a clock-in/clock-out basis?

I mean the whole concept just played on the perception of most people who are ignorant as to what the work of an MP entails. In great Socialist fashion, they played on people’s ignorance. Most think that they sit there in the Chamber all day saying yay and nay when really 99% of their work happens outside Parliament.

In any case, pardon my curiosity but can I just seek election and then continue doing my day-job? What is the point of this whole ‘government thingie’ then?

MTA should change its brand slogan.

MALTA – SICILY IN A NUTSHELL

  4. Makjavel says:

So this guy has a full time job at Mater Dei, 40 hours.

According to the great leader parliamentary members will be paid by the hours they attend.

This guys attendance at RSVP will be considered as parliament attendance.

My guess is that he will be earning more than his minister for less hours.

  5. CIS says:

So, what I understand is that he will be doing what he likes with the blessing of Marie Louise Coleiro Preca. When he is not in parliament he will say he was as SVPR when not in SVPR he will say he was at Mater Dei. etc.. etc..

  6. Min Weber says:

So when was Dominic Fenech Secretary General if M’Louise was Sec Gen from 1979-1987?

Are you sure about the dates?

I think Dominic Fenech was Sec Gen when The Times Building was burnt down.

[Daphne – Assistant secretary-general and secretary-general, 1982-1991. 1979 is when she began to take an active role in the Labour Party. Google is our friend…]

“A family to feed” … Sounds like a farm of sorts, certainly plenty of peasants. What does he “feed” his family – “Awrofak”?

  8. Paddling Duck says:

There is only one very good reason why Decelis is camping out at Mater Dei.

We’ve all heard of all the horror stories some PN-leaning residents had to face in old peoples’ home during each General Election.

He’s going to make sure that by hook or by crook these defenseless people will vote Labour come 2018 and 2023.

That my dears, are 1200 secured votes.

    • Paddling Duck says:

      *Typo, SVPR – sorry :(

    • kram says:

Paddling Duck it is already difficult for SVPR residents to vote PN. It is like a Labour fortress there with the great majority, especially nursing aides, being staunch Labourites and when it comes to elections it is like you’re in a Labour party club.

  9. Phili B. says:

What struck me most, though not surprisingly, was when she said she didn’t know what his job is at Mater Dei.

It had to be a journalist to inform her that he’s an ECG technician. I beg to ask, who on earth with a sound mind will work as a technician when one has (?) a Masters Degree in Gerontology? Hidden agenda?

  10. It-tezi ta' Mario says:

Marie Louise Coleiro thinks it’s perfectly normal to cross boundaries. She was secretary-general of the MLP in the golden years of colour TV distribution when funds from sales were funnelled into MLP coffers:

Unbelievable. Thank God I refuse to associate myself in any way at all with all the progressive switchers. I know I said time will tell but wow this is fast work, JM.
