I am baffled by your amazement at this shocking news item.
How can you expect people who sing “mitna ghalxejn mitna ghall-barrani” in that hideous ‘rokopra’ to really perceive the importance and the meaning of the eternal flame? They have no idea at all what the world wars were all about.
Just put the flame out mill-ewwel, guys. And spare us these idiotic decisions of lighting the flame at night and putting it off at dawn.
Bottom line, what we have here is a a sovereign state that also happens to be the most bombed country per square km in 1942, saving EUR 10k per annum on the eternal flame. Beyond words.

Never mind whether they know what the wars were about. The eternal flame commemorates the war dead. That much, at least, they could understand.
Joseph Muscat has to do something to show what he has done during his first hundred days. He switched the eternal flame on and off every day.
Like an SOS signal from hell.
Now you see it – now you don’t.
Really, if they intend to save some money on the flame (don’t see why, because they said that the EU did not request cost cutting), then they should be turning the flame off during the night and turning it on during daytime.
Who is going to appreciate it during the night? Or do they really think that it is intended for illumination purposes?
Maybe it should run on something eco-friendly, like fat. Between Manwel Mallia and Tony Zarb’s liposuction, il-kaxxa ta’ Malta should be spared.
Is that Keith Kasco Schembri I see in this picture? Muscat should touch him for the money to keep that flame burning. He can well afford it.
