Hello, Venezuela. You wouldn’t think that this is a 21st-century European democracy. Because you know what? It isn’t.

Cabinet Minister Marie Louise Coleiro Preca is taken by chauffeured government limo to her constituency office in Triq San Pawl, Hal Luqa.
While she meets constituents – and here I have to point out to confused minds that this is most definitely not government business, even though this government is bending over backwards to paint it as such with its ‘listening government’ theme – her chauffeur paces around outside, talking to people in the crowd that overflows from his boss’s office and into the street.
Hello, Venezuela. Welcome back, the politics of patronage.

You mean patronage and agreements announced the eve of elections.

Oops.
Rather than chatting with the crowd, shouldn’t the chauffeur be inspecting soap holders, bathroom sinks, and plumbing in new apartments belonging to the Housing Authority?
This is a basic rule in Chapter 1 of the Manual of Mintoffianomics, and Minister Coleiro Preca should know it.
St Paul’s Street, Luqa is definitely in the heart of Silvio Schembri’s territory. That’s just round the corner where Salvu Ta’ Sinjura (Silvio’s grandfather and Mangion’s father-in-law) lived: Dokkiena street. This must be a declaration of war.
