I have signed Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando’s petition
Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando has put up a petition on the petition-building site, change.org: “House of Representatives, Malta: Enact a law making cyberstalking and cyberharassment a criminal offence.”
I have just signed it, and have put down my reason for doing so:
I, my husband, my sons, my parents and sisters have all been subjected to aggressive and malicious cyber-stalking and cyber-harassment by members of the Labour Party, its supporters, and the promoter of this petition, Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando. Existing laws have not been sufficient to deal with their behaviour, which is intended to restrict, by means of threats, intimidation and malice, freedom of expression and criticism of the public individuals and politicians involved.

The chairman of the Malta Council of Science and Technology can’t take the heat but wants to stay in the kitchen.
Cyberstalking and cyberharassment is already a criminal offence.
If JPO has a problem he should just go to the police.
In cases of, say, paranoid delusions or persistent obsessive thoughts, it is necessary to consult a psychiatrist, not the police.
A real cae of “paying them in their own coin”!

Probably. Apparently the petition does not deal with stalking by phone (incidentally, also already against the law).

I wonder if the media org in question realises the irony of reporting on an initiative designed to combat cyber-harassment whilst having a headline designed to defame a woman who is exercising her right to free speech.

Hear, hear… Mind you. I ask myself as to why you should waste your valuable time on such a sod?

I thought that these are already criminal offences, especially if the case can be proven and especially since it shouldn’t matter which means one may use to harass or stalk another person?
Could it be that this petition may have been brought forward for other reasons? Ones that could be more alarming than what anyone signing it may suspect?
Isn’t cyber-stalking virtually impossible to stop because gaining proof is difficult?
Especially with so many social sites everyone is connected to nowadays! Apart from that, how is one able to know for sure, if a person is really stalking another over the net, unless their traces are tracked? Who will be tracking these traces and how? Access to ISPs’ records perhaps?
Maybe a clever way of gaining access to people’s online movements without a warrant? Or maybe just an innocent petition one would feel good about signing?
I really wish to sign the petition but have mixed feelings about this since I had the impression that these were already labelled as criminal offences. Maybe I’m being a bit paranoid?
SMS stalking too? Where would that leave the Law Commissioner?

The fact that it is already catered for under the E-Comms (Regulation) Act is immaterial to both Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando and Times of Malta. If it is not written by our second AG (Franco) it is not good enough.

Jeffrey is in need of some attention so he is kicking a fuss – you see, no one seems to have been paying much attention to his rants on facebook of late except some half a dozen idiots like him.

All children (irrespective of age and irrespective of the fact that they may be bullies too) should be protected from cyber bullying.

[Daphne – My dear, I have never harassed anyone. I don’t think you actually know what harassment is, and more pertinently, what the legal parameters are. Writing facts and opinions based on facts about public persons or persons who make their views public is not harassment. It is normal behaviour in a democracy. Do grow up.]
