Out to lunch: the Peacock and Godfrey Grima
This is what a lunch-time peacock looks like.
I thought peacocks were lunch (400 years ago, at least), but now it seems that they go out to lunch, too – as distinct from being out to lunch, that is.
I popped into Valletta for a super-quick lunch of steamed fish and steamed vegetables (lest Kurt Farrugia describes me once more as ‘self-floated’ when he means self-inflated) at The Carriage today, and who did I see when I walked in? I saw Jason Micallef, lunching a deux with Joseph Muscat’s campaign elder, Godfrey Grima. How I rued the fact that before leaving for the office I had changed my dress because it showed far too much Betty-Boop cleavage. That would have given Jason something to talk about next time he’s on TV.
Godfrey was wearing, appropriately, a sugared-almond-pink polo-shirt – in line, I suppose, with his new political thinking. Sadly, Jason’s shoes were concealed beneath the table, and sadder still, the tactful maitre d’ seated us at as great a distance as possible from the Peacock table, leaving me highly distraught and unable to (1) eavesdrop on their conversation, (2) treat them to my unblinking stare learned from repeat viewing of Al Pacino as Tony Montana in Scarface, or (3) make loud and obnoxious remarks about how peacocks should be lunch rather than at lunch, and what a nice pair of black Oxfords I had just seen in a shop window on my way in.

@Daphne. Shame on you. The way you come across I would have thought you had the chutzpah to draw a chair up to their table and join in the conversation.
Daphne,
You’ll probably find Godfrey’s a member of the ‘team ta esperti’ who’s preparing the report on the MLP defeat…
[Moderator – And are we expecting it to be critical of Jason Micallef?]
@David Zammit – he should be preparing that report for AD, then he’ll have done it for them all (bar il-partiti ta’ Emy, Normint u Jozi).
@Uncle Fester – I’d have loved to do that, but my friend would have been horrified.
Kemm nixtieq kont dubbiena fuq is saqaf f’di Kerigg!!!
I have to tell u that Pijkoks ( or Paguni) are not so good to eat. But this Particular Peacock would be tasteless, repulsive and would make u gag. It does have white teeth . At least, better than my tobacco stained I-HATE-Dentists ones. Wonder who his dentist is? Tghid l-ex mara ta JPO, or horrors, JPO himself?
Anyone knows what happened to Joe Grima (who I think is Godfrey’s brother)? From Labour bully to Net TV showman to obscurity?
The animosity in the air must have been electric. Film material, absolutely.
But seriously, I’ve always wondered how you cope with the heat, Daphne. I mean you must run into this kind of high-jinks encounter fairly regularly in ClaustroIsland. Does it never get exhausting? Or does the adrenaline rush compensate?
At any rate, kudos for the thick hide. I mean this honestly.
