They were fined Eur2,400 each, and if you think that’s steep, you weren’t there to see how bad it was. It was at the feast of St Joseph in Rabat and a mob environment rapidly ensued, with two monks taking me and a couple of people who were with me into a nearby convent and locking the door until the police arrived.

Perhaps this will serve to teach these uncivilised savages that differences of political opinion are not expressed, in civilised society, by accosting people in the street, following them persistently while insulting them, calling them names while they are walking in the road, behaving in a threatening manner and encouraging others to do the same.

These three individuals were so confident that their behaviour is normal and legitimate that they even made a point of insulting me at every court hearing, when I walked past them in the law courts.

I am glad that Natius Farrugia, in particular, has been bound over not to approach me for a year or suffer another fine of Eur1,000, because he really does not know what civilised behaviour is, following me around jeering and passing remarks whenever he sees me in public, to the point where I had to wonder whether he is really all there.

Brilliant! Was waiting for this. Prosit.

  2. albona says:

Congratulations. It is not at all steep. I was surprised it was so low. In any case he may be able to be less of a sugar daddy to his boyfriend now. No more Emirates for a while, buddy.

[Daphne – It’s very steep, in Maltese terms.]

  3. Artemis says:

    Only in Malta. Ignorant pigs.

Headlne news on TVM … I don’t think so.

    What a nice, classy trio.

    Well done, Daphne!

“following me around jeering and passing remarks whenever he sees me in public, to the point where I had to wonder whether he is really all there.”

    So, let’s summarize:

    a) no psychiatric treatment was requested
    b) the restriction order for someone who is potentially dangerous (to those he despises) lasts only 1 year
    c) someone committing harassment can still hold office
    d) someone who commits harassment does not get time or a criminal record

    Oh, and… Natius:

    a) stop commenting about Daphne’s very natural features (which you call ‘fat’) and get yourself a mirror. You sound like an idiot.
    b) do you inject Botox in your face? You’re starting to look like a Thussaud’s mannequin.
    c) Why do you keep taking these awfully pathetic pictures with adults and children (and animals) and posting them publicly on your Facebook?

  7. just me says:

This is good news… Natius Farrugia should resign from Mayor. He is an embarrassment to the village of Zurrieq.

    • Joe Fenech says:

He should have never been voted in in the first place. He is gutterly low and it sounds like he’s got a screw loose.

  8. Snooze says:

    Holy lip liner!

  9. tinnat says:

Is that “nun” on the left heavily pregnant?

  10. Bubu says:

What scum. They deserved a much higher fine than they got, considering that not only did they never express any remorse or regret, they actually persisted in harassing you even after the original case.

  11. Angus Black says:

Daphne, first of all, congratulations for winning the case.

[Daphne – I didn’t win any case, but thank you. These were all police cases. I was the victim in three of them (and hence, with no role in the eyes of the law except as a witness) and found not guilty in the other. I was not the person who sued, as in a civil case. These were all police prosecutions.]

These thugs will never learn anything. They are too ignorant and too blind to see themselves for what they really are.

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

Don’t be so modest. If you hadn’t informed the police in the first place, there would have been no police prosecution. I think this is something of a landmark case in Maltese jurisprudence. So congrats and gotbless.

  12. betty says:

Well done, Daphne; I’m glad the court found them guilty, and you not guilty. I think that the ‘mayor’ should resign because of this. What a chav to say the least.

  13. Adrian says:

This man is a shame to all the people of Zurrieq. He should resign if he has some dignity. But dignity does not feature in any Labourite mind.

  14. bob-a-job says:

His position as mayor of Zurrieq is no longer tenable.

One would now expect Dr Toni Abela to demand his resignation – sakemm l-istorja ma’ tinħallx bħal silġa

Bundy had a good dig at him re harassment but he’s so thick or sick that he didn’t get it.

  16. Spock says:

I am so glad that justice was done Daphne ! It was a welcome break inthe middle of this mess we’re living in .

  17. zerafa says:

All those who know Natius know he is not all there. Yet people vote for him. Will never understand.

  18. A Montebello says:

    Congratulations.

Can’t help hoping you’ll run into the mayor in Valletta somewhere because I am sure that he won’t be able to resist passing a comment if just to entertain who ever it is he is with, you know.. ghax cajtir bhalu ma ssibx. Taf kemm hu orrajt u minn tgahna, hux.

    Great pic by the way.

  19. sammy says:

Did Reno Bugeja include this in the TVM news?

  20. Victor says:

Well done Daphne. I’m so glad that justice was served in this matter.

I simply cannot accept the fact that these people think they have every right to behave obnoxiously, with no regard to rules and laws, just because they are in government.

  21. gigi says:

  23. Last Post says:

    Steep?

You can thank your stars the case wasn’t heard before Judge Peralta. At least your ‘injuries’ weren’t permanent…

  24. TROY says:

    Good on you, Daphne.

  25. Matt says:

isn’t this enough reason for him to resign?

  26. Natalie Mallett says:

Best news we’ve had for weeks. I was cheering like mad when I heard it on the news this morning as I drove the kids to school.

Well done, Daphne. Perhaps Natius can now concentrate on sorting out decent pavements for us users with pushchairs in Zurrieq. I can take him for a walk if he wishes to experience the ordeal we and our children have to face every day.

  27. verita says:

Prosit Daphne. Don’t let anyone intimidate you just because you’re the only serious blogger who always points the truth to us and with all the relevant proofs .Well done. As for Natius he should resign as the Zurrieq Mayor.

  28. Frans Cassar says:

    Not fit for purpose. Resign

  29. AE says:

Good to see the justice system working for a change.

  30. M. Cassar says:

What an inspiration from a person in public office!

This must come as a shock to those who only heard the version given on TV.

  31. Kukkurin says:

A much needed lesson for thugs. The Mayor’s head should certainly roll. But good to see the nuns having some success in attracting vocations.

  32. Gahan says:

The Hal Far road to Zurrieq is a nightmare; one third of the street lights don’t work and the potholes in the road can do quite a lot of damage to the car’s suspension.

I noticed that some potholes are being filled up with stones by some residents or frequent users of this road.

Shame on you, Natius. You can’t repair the roads or be a good mayor by inciting people against your critics. I will be making a formal request for compensation at the Zurrieq Local Council, if my car is certified not roadworthy.

  33. matt says:

What possessed the residents from Zurrieq to vote for this idiot?

  34. Timon of Athens says:

My mind boggles what went on in his twisted mind, when he posed for the first pic posted above.

  35. Foggy says:

In any normal EU country the pathetic behaviour of this mayor would result in his resignation or, failing this, suspension from his party.

In Malta where a judge facing impeachment proceedings continues to hear cases it is unlikely to happen. What a sad commentary on the state of acceptable political behaviour in Malta.

  36. M Galea says:

What a sleazy trio! Kif ma jisthux?

  37. Bob says:

As a convicted criminal, can he remain serving as Mayor of Zurrieq? Many other Mayors and Councilors have resigned for more petty issues…

  38. ssssup says:

Such wonderfully selected photographs to illustrate the foundations of our current government, and glad that it’s over for you.
