Posted by Botom in reaction to news of space being cleared for Mintoff’s statue opposite the Auberge de Castille:

The irony of it all is that during his last years when Mintoff became more weak and difficult to cope with, he was completely abandoned not only by his two daughters but also by the Labour Party.

At some stage his daughters wanted to dump him at St Vincent de Paule Residence where a special unit was arranged for him according to the likes of his daughters costing thousands of Euros but Mintoff adamantly refused admission.

He continued to live alone at home in Tarxien in the most appalling conditions, until upon instructions from the former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, a nursing aide was released from Mater Dei Hospital and dispatched to his home to assist him and ensure that he takes his medication.

In fact very frequently Mintoff used to call Nationalist Ministers to assist him, apart from Fr Gordon Refalo, who remained close to him till the very end. Indeed those who abandoned him during the time when he needed them most are now trying to exploit him after his death.

      How ‘short’ was Mintoff?

[Daphne – Around five feet. His (lack of height) was never published but I worked it out by the fact that his head was level with my shoulder and I am only five foot six or seven despite impressions to the contrary.]

  1. Calculator says:

Not that ironic actually if you really think about it. They adore Mintoff the legend, “is-Salvatur”. Mintoff the person, as despicable and similar to current Labour leaders as he was, could go hang for all they care.

  2. nutmeg says:

So true, Dom Mintoff is to the Labour Party only an adaptable brand asset.

  3. Peritocracy says:

    It’s called brand positioning.

The ‘decrepit old man’ image is bad for business. The ‘dead hero who deserves worship’ image is where it’s at.

  4. Joe Fenech says:

This is also valid for those who think that Kaddafi was a friend who donated money to Malta.

    • Marlowe says:

I know Gaddafi and Mintoff had a falling-out sometime in the 80s over oil rights and whatnot, but did they ever patch it up? For a time tension was so high that an Italian air force squadron was deployed to Luqa.

I’m not surprised at how Mintoff was abandoned by the Labour Party. After all, he did bring down the Sant government but I think the rot goes deeper.

Mintoff was reported to endorse George Abela in the leadership race (see link below). It’s not surprising since Joseph was still hanging onto Sant’s coattails. I also remember an article penned by Joseph Muscat himself, ranting against his ‘idol’ just after the decisive parliament vote. Unfortunately, I cannot find it on the net. How could Mintoff endorse his number 1 “admirer”?

To our current Prime MInister, salvatur to traditur and back to salvatur is all in a day’s work as long as his ambitions are achieved.

I am sure Alfred Sant rests easy knowing Joseph Muscat will use him again just as callously as he used Mintoff. While I cannot dredge up a single shred of sympathy towards either Sant or Mintoff, I scream with impotence at the ignorance of the typical Labour supporter.

If it happened to him, it can happen to anyone in the civil service.

Meantime Maltatoday make sure Norman Vella is portrayed as having been ‘on leave beyond any limit’, conveniently leaving ‘unpaid’ and ‘regularised renewal request’ out.

When will Maltatoday stop abusing journalism?

What is a year? Not even the time for an application to pass through all the stages. An acceptable minimum would have been five years.

I still believe that it is a ‘sale’. Who is going to make sure that the investment in property and government bonds are going to be kept for the required time? And where is the ‘talent’ that is supposed to be coming to Malta?

I hope that the PN votes against or abstains.

The arrogance which he showed on 24 December when he appeared with Joe Bannister to his right and David Curmi to his left, is gone. Viviane Reding has cut the classroom bully down to size. And she has given him a one-year detention to make good for the one which he once avoided at St Aloysius.

But as typical of him, he has already started to find the “technical loopholes” in the agreement reached with the Commission, such as with the meaning of the word “residence.” The statement by the Commission refers to the agreement as “done in good faith and in a spirit of sincere cooperation” – but you can’t have that with Joseph Muscat, can you? I had warned Viviane Reding about this before…

  13. carlos bonavia says:

Nothing to do with this thread, but it’s been announced that the government has agreed to have a one-year residence requirement for their citizenship scheme, with the incumbents having to prove that it was active residence.

Well, knowing Labour, they already have it sussed out – they will simply stamp every new passport they issue in advance, thus the prospective buyers would already have their residence requirement plus their citizenship.

And Joseph marches on, hampered by none, not the PN and not the European Commission.

  17. Maltri says:

I am not against the statue of Mintoff. It will be a monument to the person who divided Malta into ‘North’ and ‘South.’

A monument to the mentality of ‘us’ and ‘them.’

A reminder of the cause of the British army’s departure. Also monument of the sub-division of the Labour Party into socialists and Mintoffjani.

Let’s not be so negative. It is also a monument of union. We had the cooperation of the police force with the Labour thugs, the Labour Party’s marriage with the GWU, the nationalisation of private companies like banks, union with Muammar Gaddafi’s despotic regime in Libya, close ties with the communist dictators of the era, and so much more.

I picture his statue, in his early eighties image, his tiny person, standing straight, glaring with satisfaction at the Prime Minister’s office window, while zipping up his fly (this time round) as if saying:
    “h*8.com”
