Mr and Mrs Karmenu Vella are not going to be deprived of access to their grandchild, their son or their daughter-in-law when Miriam Dalli (who is Mrs John Vella) becomes a member of the European Parliament in June.

Karmenu Vella will be EU Commissioner concurrently.

How really cosy.

Taghna lkoll, taghna lkoll, taghna lkoll.

I expect Simon Busuttil to endorse Karmenu Vella, for the sake of national unity, as per bloody usual.

    Karmenu Vella jista jinbidel.

What is she doing with that hairstyle in her 40s? Looks like Little Bo Peep on a night out.

As Joseph Cuschieri can barely contain his rage at being sidelined in the party’s EU campaign.

‘halliena qisna vazuni ghad-dehra’ he said.

Muscat seems to lack cognition of the one cardinal rule in politics: never break your promises.

  8. just me says:

Karmenu Vella will be subjected to intense grilling by MEPs. I wonder whether he will pass the test.

  9. M. Cassar says:

Is this the same Karmenu Vella who did not know about the requirement of informing port control re overnight stays in unauthorized areas?

Will they be televising the assessment?

    • Anthony says:

It will be held behind closed doors.

The EU is enough of a laughing-stock as it is.

    • Jozef says:

That makes him ideal for trade and borders then.

Tara kemm se jaghmel bizniss. Imagine il-Guy addressing the EU parliament on Chinese imports routing the continent’s productive fabric.

Does Jo stop to think for a minute on the image we are portraying outside these blessed shores?

We are ‘exporting’ people like The Fat Controller, Karmenu l-Guy to represent us in world forums. Not to mention the appointment of quasi octagenarians as ambassadors.

  11. Barabbas Borg says:

To be fair with the commissioner designate, perhaps he’s one of the former minister who both in the 96 short lived government and the current government kept away from controversies. What taints him is his Mintoffian past.. let’s see if he’ll be grilled on that in the Commission’s appointment process.

[Daphne – How exactly did Karmenu Vella ‘keep away from controversies’ in 1996-1998? He was part of the controversial government.]

    • Barabbas Borg says:

What I mean is that he wasn’t involved in any scandal, unlike other Ministers of the day.

[Daphne – No minister of the day was involved in any particular scandal, except for a brief bit of rubbish with Charlie Mangion. It was the entire government that was a scandal in itself. In 22 months, Karmenu Vella didn’t have much time to get involved in scandals. In the 1980s, it was an entirely different matter. His driver was implicated by a fellow thug in the drive-by shooting on several PN clubs which resulted in the murder of Raymond Caruana, for one.]
