I have just received this information about the official Malta delegation being sent to the Eurovision Song Contest:

Anton Attard – Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) CEO

Tonio Portugese – PBS chairman

Mark Vassallo – PBS lawyer, law partner in Economy Minister Chris Cardona’s law office and former (?) director and shareholder of television production company Where’s Everybody

Doreen Cortis – PBS board secretary

Olwyn Saliba – editor, hired from Where’s Everybody

Natius Farrugia – Labour mayor of Zurrieq

Deo Grech – show-host/presenter on the Labour Party’s television station (day job – teacher)

Gordon and Rodney – show-hosts/presenters on PBS television

Six members of the group Firelight, who will be performing

Daniel D’Anastasi – works for the PBS website

I am informed that Deo Grech and Natius Farrugia were added to the list at the request of the Office of the Prime Minister.

If Firelight make it through to the final round, the huge and self-important Maltese delegation will have another two members: Broadcasting, Police and Army Minister Manuel Mallia (PBS is in his portfolio) and his chief of staff (You Know Who He Is).

  1. The Observer says:

Well at least the mayor got a free ticket this time round, so it was ‘wertit’.

And no wonder Where’s Everybody kept their cosy spot on Friday nights on PBS: hbieb tal-hbieb, I see.

I suspect there will also have to be a sizeable contingent from the Police Corps to look after the catering of the EBU party that follows the final.

    Viva l-Kultura (taz-z###)

    • Spock says:

“Zobb”, Joe , the word is “zobb” – with the level of ‘kultura’ in Malta now emanating from the lowest pits, don’t bother with politically correct writing.

Just join the band of hamallagni and let off some suppressed steam. It’s better for your health, believe me.

  4. H.P. Baxxter says:

Will they be staying in a five-star hotel in Copenhagen, or will they camp?

Might as well change song title from “Coming Home” to “Going On A Holiday”.

I wonder what spin the “Positive Energy” campaigners will give to this?

    http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20140425/local/deficit-increases-by-581-million.516382

“The deficit of the government’s Consolidated Fund amounted to €225.6 million in the first quarter, €58.1 million more than in the same period last year, according to the National Statistics Office.”

  8. ciccio says:

This should give something to do to the hundreds or thousands of “Positive Energy” Eurovision and Facebook enthusiasts in Malta.

    Cecilia Malmstrom comes to mind.

  9. Osservatore says:

We all know that the Eurovision Song Contest is a magnet for those who may be ‘otherwise inclined’.

Could Natius miss the opportunity to turn up for some of the action armed with full ‘ola’ body waxing, oiling and eyebrow plucking for some of the action? One can hardly blame him for trying, least of all for succeeding to become part of the delegation.

Have a good romp on us taxpayer Natius, forsi tibqa tahta.

  10. xdcc says:

“The new ERA (Environment and Resources Authority) to be set up needs to be given sufficient power rather than be relegated to an external consultant. As it is, it will only remain an afterthought in planning processes.”

This is what the NGOs said today. Alfred Baldacchino, who was one of the speakers at today’s press conference, was the most vociferous advocate for the separation of environment from planning.

Does he still think it is a good idea?

  11. Nathalie says:

This whole Eurovision thing is a costly charade. As usual politics plays the most important role. Poplu miskin ours.

  12. Evelyn says:

Deo Grech is a teacher or head of school. How long is he going to be away from school? Do they get leave of absence for this?

    • AMG says:

To attend some lectures in the UK as part of my Masters degree, the Education Department gave me two days UNPAID leave because that is the procedure! And this is a head of school?

  13. P Shaw says:

What about Eva Peron and her galactic twins, the first lady’s hairdresser, secretary and PR?

  14. Patrik says:

They, of course, had to have a gay guy in their troupe and tossed a coin between him and that big-eared guy (name escapes me – the one with the saucy pictures of his ex-lover).

  15. Silvio loporto says:

First it was a woman on every board, which we all agree with.

Is it now a gay man in every delegation?

    • ken il malti says:

At the rate that this Labour government is going with that program, they will soon run out of homosexual men to promote and will have to import them to fill in the vacancies.

  16. PWG says:

    Tajba Baxxter.

  17. ken il malti says:

Why is Jo wearing lipstick in that photo?

  18. infinitive says:

I guess it is all about meritocracy.

Can someone please indicate how much this will cost the poor taxpayers?

  19. silly says:

    l-izjed jekk l-imgieba tieghu tkun kif kienet f’Liquorish…hamallagni tal-wahx.

  20. Gaetano Pace says:

Xaqq dawl ghaliex Xarabank zamm postu u sar magna tal-propaganda Laburista? Meritokrazija fl-aqwa taghha.

  21. M Borg says:

    Where’s Everybody?

On holiday in Copenhagen of course.

  22. Ivan says:

Just realized that missing from the delegation are:

    – Make up artist(s)
    – Hair stylist(s)
    – Video producer Angie Laus
    – Vocal Coach (I believe it’s Pamela)

Are these travelling at their own cost if travelling at all?

What is the role of Ignatius Farrugia and Deo Grech? Didn’t they travel as fans out of their own pockets in the past?

With regards to Olwyn Saliba, I believe that normally 2 persons from WE fly over to carry out the daily features and other coverage. Not sure if it’s Peppi’s wife normally who travels with her.
