noprivacydotcom: there’s now a webcam covering the whole of Palace Square

webcam palace square

Well, not quite the whole of the square, because there’s quite a sizable bit off that side of the square where politicians and their buddies and aides saunter in and out of parliament in the palace.

So if you must walk through Palace Square, remember to keep tight to the palace to be off the range of view of this webcam which is going 24/7.

Otherwise, if you think you’re walking through a deserted square at half past midnight with not a soul about and nobody to see you, you’re wrong.

I’ve seen one or two people already just now – not anyone I know, but they include a young man skipping about to and fro under the mistaken impression, poor thing, that there’s nobody there to see him.

See for yourself – the link to the webcam is below.

‘Beautiful view of the main square of the capital with its magnificent The Palace’

    Who vets these people’s English?

  2. ciccio says:

Ah, so we can now keep an eye on anyone stealing water from the Main Guard fountain in jerry cans.

    • Min Jaf says:

Not really. The side where The Manwel Mallia water fountains are located is outside the range of the webcam. So it does look that the orientation of the camera lens might well be intentional. Manwel Mallia is minister responsible for security, is he not?

  3. D.Bonello says:

This camera was installed over two months ago.

  4. Rabti says:

    Were are the street furniture?

[Daphne – I gather you mean the benches. Those at the Archbishop Street end are clearly in view. Those at the Old Theatre Street end are just out of shot.]

    • Snoopy says:

The benches that were in the centre of the square seems to have been removed, maybe on the 30th of April for the PN meeting. If this is so, it is about time to put them back in their place.

  5. Len says:

That was done for security reasons, because somebody was stealing water from the fountains.

If anybody sees a Romanian maid with a double pushchair containing jerry-cans, please call the police commissioner directly. His number is 7900 0331.

I am sure there used to be two soldiers stationed there. Have we replaced them with this cam?

I suppose they are now stationed at the Grand Harbour guarding tankers.

  8. A la Francisa says:

What’s happened to the guards usually seen standing to attention at the Palace entrance? Even at 8 am, there’s no sign of them. Did some army underling complain that this is toomacc and that it doesn’t make sense to stand there when il-Palazz maghluq?

  9. observer says:

Big brother is watching you at all times and at so many sites.

The webcam includes four or five other venues. Nahseb anki kelb qed ixarrab mal-hajt jehel ma rashom.

  10. albona says:

    True guardians of civil liberties.

  11. Tabatha White says:

Put face recognition in, a few more webcams managed by the Police Force (that manages this), a merge between Transport Malta and Identita Malta (Isn’t this also under Manwel Mallia?) and Big Brother is active.

Who knows, with the circle of friends Manwel Mallia has, the crack team will be watching to know when houses are empty.

Glad to note Gozo is spared the invasion of privacy – that we know of.

Beware of hackers using “[email protected]” to gain access.

What happened to those “photos of each facade” exercise?

  12. Painter says:

For once I’m impressed. There is no lag and picture quality is good enough to make out things in the distance.
