I have just received this email from a Sliema reader whose father, uncles & c were all police officers:

I have realised after looking properly at the photo of newly reinstated police officers that one of them is David Sant, the police officer who was given a prison sentence for hitting a French woman driver some years ago. He comes from a very staunch Nationalist family in Sliema but is a very good friend of Labour PS Michael Falzon (ta’ Stella Maris). Sant is married to a Mintoffjana, and in the last general election he had voted Labour. Maybe that is why he voted Labour – he had been promised that he will be reinstated in the police force.

It gets worse: a bit of tracking back through the newspapers of the time and we find that David Sant had already been reinstated a some months after the Appeal Court judgement which suspended his prison sentence for a year (2007) on the advice of the Public Service Commission (2008) though he was put on formal warning of dismissal.

There was a lot of bad press about his reinstatement at the time because it was considered to have happened too soon after the judgement sentencing him to prison (suspended on appeal).

So what happened in the interim that he is now being reinstated yet again – was he dismissed, did he leave after 25 years service, or what?

That doesn’t bode well for the standard of the Police force and the public’s perception of them. From waiters to those who manhandle female members of the public…

David Sant’s close Sliema friends include Silvio tal-Mqaret ta’ Johnny Bahamas.

If Manwel Mallia cannot carry out a decent due diligence on a local ex police officer, what are the chances that his motley crew carry out the same exercise for the Citizen Scheme applicants?

    • Makjavel says:

Wrong, Mallia’s due diligence is specifically to pick the worst of the lot , to have a better deal for the passport sale.
      Remember the €500,000.

There must be some who are in their late sixties.

This is who Mallia is employing whilst leaving graduates out of the force?

The army and the police – down Mallia’s drain.

Probably hoping he would blend in amongst the overweight, Mallia still beats them all with his whopping belly.

I’m sure a closer look at these people’s background will show that they were sent packing under the PN administration because of one thing or another.

And now Muscat shows up with his forgiveness and gives them their job back because in the PL’s eyes “It’s not fair that someone is punished”.

This is another example of the ignorance you spoke of, Daphne. Only the ignorant would hit someone while on duty as a police officer and then have no problem being given their job back.

Muscat the redeemer! God help us all.

Why be surprised, when the Prime Minister, lionises a convicted individual and states that he shares his value? The situation is beyond shameless.

And now we are some notches lower with Cyrus Engerer’s case. He was not even suspended.

I guess this was part of the roadmap, a progressive and positive government. I am sure Minister Mallia’s excuse is to ensure that justice prevails.

Don’t blame the minister, please. The promise for new politics was made absolutely clear: vote Labour, get Labour.

    End of story.

Really good PR, this is. We pay our taxes and are convinced that we should be respecting the officers.
