Pulling pranks is a good Opposition tactic, but it fails in government

Published: May 23, 2014 at 10:32am

When the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee called a meeting for the purpose of requesting a copy of the government’s contract with Henley & Partners, a couple of days ago, all Labour Party members of that committee failed to turn up, claiming prior engagements.

They included our proposed EU Commissioner Karmenu Vella, who was in the parliament building at the time, presumably conducting his prior engagement.

They did this so that the Public Accounts Committee could not form a quorum to demand a copy of the report. The prank would have worked well and been looked at favourably were they in Opposition, but they are now in government, and pranks pulled to protect that government sit very unfavourably indeed with the electorate.

A shift in power should come with a shift in tactics.

    Absolutely pathetic.

Who do they all think they are – they are answerable for their actions, even though the uneducated lot haven’t realised that yet.

What kills me is the realisation that the majority of people in Malta are downright stupid. Lets face it we have a bunch of goons instead of a government, this alone speaks volumes.

Regrettably, I have come to accept that the electorate could not give two hoots about anything if said electorate receives a cheque for Euro 110 a week or so before polling day.

I’m very sad to say that Muscat is very wise in sending this “bonanza” now. All will be forgiven and forgotten. I’m quite sure of it. The people in the streets couldn’t care less, really, about anything else.

The PM is terrified of meeting the Press.

Documents of the utmost national interest are not tabled in parliament.

The government has worked itself into a corner. It is playing defensive politics. This does not augur well at all.

Is it possible it cannot get anything right except for knocking two eurocents off the price of a litre of petrol ?

I beg to differ. He did not knock off 2cents off petrol. He simply returned by way of amends and retribution what he had stolen from us two months earlier. We know that they have he cheek but never knew they had a conscience.

When in opposition Joe Mizzi was a specialist in this tactic.

They probably think they are very clever. Shame on them.

Leave them to it, all they’re doing is confirm there’s something to hide.

And when that’s the case, the shape of things to come is even more controversy.

All MP’s were in the house, Carmelo Abela actually put the blame on Tonio Fenech for calling the PAC at a day’s notice.

As if the Opposition chairing the PAC isn’t one of the checks and balances to hold government to its responsibilities.

Labour mistakes the democratic vote for a right to go beyond regulated mandate.

It seems that the suit does not make a man of substance does it?

Now we just have to wait for the intellectually challenged and count how many times they must be made a fool of before they recognize lies for what they are. God help us!

It should sit unfavourably with the electorate. Unfortunate most of the electorate don’t think and even of those who do, some are so blinded by party allegiance that they will applaud whatever this lot do. That doesn’t leave many people.

And today, of all days, the PM named 9 new directors-general in the civil service. Fishing for votes till the very end.
