So Mrs Konrad Mizzi is going to be the Maltese consul in Shanghai, speeding up visas for her countryfolk

Mrs Konrad Mizzi, quoted in Malta Today three days ago:

Mizzi Liang said had advised the Maltese government on what course of action to take on various investment possibilities. “One of my first steps was to improve the issuing of visas for Chinese… the reason for being in Shanghai as consul was because it was not a political centre but a business centre,” Mizzi Liang said.

In The Sunday Times today:

Dr Muscat added that Malta had finally also been given the go-ahead to open the consulate-general in Shanghai – the province is more of a financial services hub, compared to Beijing that is much more of a political centre – which will serve as a base for Ms Mizzi Laing.

‘Improving’ the issue of visas means slackening controls. We should have learned our lesson from what’s been going on with the Maltese consulate in Tripoli – big scandal there.

Joseph Muscat, as reported in The Sunday Times: “specialised package for Chinese tourists where, for example, they could holiday on the island for three days then set out on a cruise to southern Europe and the Mediterranean.” LOL.

Can I have my version, like: “specialised package for Chinese tourists where, for example, they could holiday two days in Malta, one day in Gozo and half day in Comino, then catching a ferry to mainland Europe and disappear into the black economy.”

It is not just visas. A consulate can issue passports. The Maltese consulate in Egypt issues biometric passports.

Just imagine a situation in which the Maltese consulate in Shanghai, headed by Mrs. Mizzi (does she have a Maltese passport?) issues passports to the Chinese without their setting foot in Malta.
