Is the Marquesa de Varela back from China yet?

Saviour Balzan Peking Duck

The Koolaid Saviour Balzan drank on the plane to China was so effective that he woke up thinking of China as a FORMER Communist giant.

China actually has the best of both worlds – so to speak – when it comes to authoritarianism. Its economy has enough capitalism to generate some semblance of wealth, while its political Stalinist-styled Communism ensures that that wealth goes into the hands of Communist Party members.

Some people still equate Communism with the economic system but fail to recognise the legacy of political oppression that the term now carries. China is definitely till very Communist in that regard.

I’ve been to China several times for work. From my first hand experiences all I can say is that no matter how hard they try to look transparent, open and OK, they remain a corrupt amoral country run by a big clique of corrupt amoral opportunists.

Each time I travelled to China I always learned something new about how they carry on with their dirty business. One day you’re drinking and joking with an executive and the next day he passes next to you and won’t stop to sign your final documents, while looking at you as if he does not know you from Adam.

At the end of a business lunch, abundant hampers of exotic fruit and what-not are transferred to the cars of the executives by the agents.

I have seen more but I’d better stop here.

Corruption and cheating is now ingrained in their culture.

Did Mister BS bother to ‘investigate’ child labour in China while enjoying his free ride and his “delicious Peking duck”?

Or was he so mesmerised by the aura surrounding his Great Leader-in-Midget-Form that he did not even bother to see what other international news agencies report?

  5. What Mr Balzan should have asked himself before penning such an idiotic statement that throws serious doubts on his competence to comment on current affairs, are two questions. (1) Is China a giant? (2) Is it currently a Communist state? Anyone who is interested in current affairs should know that the answer to both is a resounding, “Yes”.

Malta had a decrease of 11.9% compared to the previous year while the next country with a decrease was France with a 4.2% decrease

  7. bob-a-job says:

Oh a FORMER Communist giant is it?

The Chinese Communist Party’s more than 80,000,000-strong membership makes it the biggest political party in the world. Its tight organisation and ruthlessness help explain why it is also still in power.

Hallina Balzan. Biex titwemmen (mhux mic-cwiec) trid tkun kredibli.

And while we are about it. What is Saviour Balzan’s agenda where it concerns Dalli?

Does Dalli own Malta Today, Saviour Balzan or both?

  8. ciccio says:

    Quote of the week:

“On the trip to China Muscat joked and quipped that I might be considered a persona non grata because of my past. It still worries me to think that China is not a democratic state and is run by the communist party. But there is nothing to show that communism reigns. Capitalism is so barefaced and wealth is so diffused that I have to say I am confused.”

Surely one excessive confession by BS.

Enough material in there for a diplomatic row between the two countries, and for Li Kiqiang to put the MOU he signed with Muscat into the shredder.

The prime minister on the way to signing an MOU with Li Keqiang joking with a journalist from a free country that he could be considered a persona non grata in China? Tsk Tsk.

But this is the truth: Saviour Balzan of Malta Today would not be a free man to say what he likes, especially about government, if he was a Chinese citizen.

And instead of taking the opportunity, as a western journalist, to make the Chinese communist dictatorship accountable to its 1.4 billion people, he salivates at the thought of China’s trillion US$ in reserves.

“But are the Chinese genuinely interested in Malta, or has the exceptional VIP treatment throughout the visit been just a show of Chinese diplomacy?”

“Joseph Muscat concedes the press some time for an interview in the lavishness of his private quarters.”

A delicious curry or even a currywurst wins over Peking duck any time.

Get the point, our Saviour? Or do I have to go puerile?

China has gone the way of Lino Spiteri, Peter Serracino Inglott, the ghonella, Xarabank, l-Istrina and carnival floats: it has become a sacred cow. No criticism or else.

  12. J. Agius says:

May I suggest to BS to emigrate to China since he is so impressed following his visit which was sponsored by us taxpayers.

  13. Anthony Cachia Castelletti says:

Mr. Balzan is still following his personal agenda (very much in favour of the PL). He has lost all credentials as an independent journalist.

  14. gaetano pace says:

All over news networks that transmit interviews with students, workers and the lay people of China come up with the same stories of oppression. Students join the communist party, first to make it possible for them to gain entry. Then if some of the students are earmarked as poets, orators, writers, they are immediately seen to by the Party which entices them to write in favour of the regime and compare the “happy” state of China to the woes of the West. No one would find a job unless and until such time as one joins the Party. When they do join they find that the next step to climb is the greasing of palms in golden handshakes.Unbelievable, some of the stories do take us back to times worse than the dark ages. What boggles my mind is how could people live under such conditions ? The answer is in icon Tianamen Square.
