Why did the minister’s driver ask the control room to put him through to the minister?

Published: December 8, 2014 at 2:35pm

Presumably, he could have rung him directly on his mobile phone. The driver was babysitting Mallia’s daughter at night while Mallia was at a party at Police HQ (the official line), so like any normal parent he would have had his phone on him ready to take calls from the babysitter.

But hang on – normal parent? Mine never left me with the driver at night, and I can’t envisage any scenario in which I might have left mine with a driver if I had one.

Would you leave your primary-school-age daughter with a man of 40, a gun and a couple of crates of Red Bull? I didn’t think so, either. Social Services should get involved immediately.

But back to the original point: why didn’t Sheehan just ring Mallia on his mobile phone?

  1. Joe Fenech says:

Social services – if they weren’t so useless, they would be taking 70% of Maltese children away from their crappy parents.

  2. canon says:

Sheehan was advised to call Mallia at the Police Headquarters to provide an alibi for Mallia.

  3. Parent says:

A crocodile makes a better parent than Don Manwel.

  4. inguanez says:

Maybe he wanted the call to be recorded?

  5. curious says:

In the fifth recording that has just been aired, Sheehan is heard saying ‘Dan fis-sakra mejjet’.

Why on earth wasn’t he at least arraigned for drunk driving?

    • Someone says:

How many people are drunk out of their wits at 900 pm? You might be drunk out of your wits at 5pm or at 11pm, but not at 9pm.

It must be to an implausible low degree of mathematical probability that would align the events to bring possibly the most inebriated driver on the Maltese roads at that point in time, to hit the car of the Police Minister (who is also his lawyer) driven by a Red Bull-fuelled, armed nutcase, in a side street in Gzira.

Maybe someone from the Faculty of Mathematics could work it out for us?

  6. watchful eye says:

The proximity (in GM14) was too close and there would have been some interference me thinks.

  7. Ramona says:

It’s almost like he realised he’d let slip that the minister was with him in the car, so he wanted to correct himself for the official record.

  8. Ian says:

Maybe he did and the Minister didn’t or could not answer.

  9. TinaB says:

Perhaps because after a while it occurred to him/them that (Sheehan) had mentioned that the minister was with him, when he called the police control room the first time and wanted to make it look like he said that due to the panicked state he was in, knowing the calls are all recorded?

  10. Paul B says:

Jista ikun li l-ministru kien mieghu qabel spara, imbaghad harbuh minn fuq il-post u wassluh fejn kuginuh il-kummisarju id-depot tal-Pulizija biex ikollu alibi li ma kienx fuq ix-xena tar-reat.

B’hekk Sheehan beda l-hin kollu jitlob biex ikellem lill-ministru li qieghed id-Depot (qal hu).

Tinsewx il-fattur importanti li l-ministru Mallia avukat tal-kriminal u dawn ikunu l-ewwel tattici li jiguh f’mohhu f’sitwazzjoni bhal din.

  11. Confused says:

In the first call, PC533 asks for the Rapid Intervention Unit to be sent to Tal-Qroqq. He tells the switch board operator that his gun is drawn.

In the 45 seconds preceding the first shot, not once does he speak to Mr. Smith. Indeed at the 45 second mark, PC 533 can be heard speaking in the background referring to someone as ‘Dott’.

Now eyewitness accounts report that they heard a noisy argument and then a gun is drawn, and shots fired.

None of the arguing can be heard nor can any other chatter be heard.

Is it plausible that a man involved in an argument, with a gun drawn on him is not asking PC 533 to put it away or trying to reason with him (as the eye-witness accounts state).

Not once in the 45 seconds preceding the shooting do we hear PC 533 order Mr. Smith to stay put. Was there any mention of a third person in the eye witness accounts?
It seems terribly odd to me that not once does PC533 speak to the person on whom he has drawn a gun. Neither can one hear PC533 ever shout at Mr. Smith to stop.

And another point on my mind is that PC533 later mentions that Smith had already escaped twice before. Is this a lie?

If not then what had Mr Smith escaped from, when and where?

It would definitely lay to rest the ‘hit and run excuse’. Was the ‘Dott’ present the first time that Mr. Smith escaped from PC533? Is that why the gun came out on their second encounter?

  12. R Camilleri says:

Maybe he wanted to put it on record that Mallia was at the Police HQ since before he said that the Minister was with him.

Was he covering for Mallia? Where was Mallia?

    • Tom Double Thumb says:

The first reports said Dr Mallia was “attending a social function” at Police Headquarters.

Is it not strange that not a single witness has been called to corroborate or deny this? What social function was it?

Was he there or wasn’t he? Or was it a “secret” social function between the Minister and the Commissioner?

  13. Paul B says:

Jista ikun li ghalhekk Smith ma jridx jitkellem, ghax ikollu jghid li kien hemm il-ministru dak il-hin tal-isparatura.

  14. Wistin Schembri says:

    Il-Ministru ma jafux.

  15. Kummentatur says:

Kif id-driver tal-Ministru ma cempilx lil Ministru direttament?
Ghaliex gideb u qal li l-ministru kien fil-karozza mieghu?
Ghaliex qal li mieghu fil-karozza kellu t-tifla tal-Ministru?
    X’mod huwa kif il-Pulizija tal-112 jittekiljaw telefonata?

    Mela:
Sheehan waqt li kien qed isuq kien qed jitkellem fuq il-mobile u jinstema jispara fl-istess hin? Huwa stess jghid lil Pulizija li Sparajtlu! Kemm il-id ghandu?
Min huma dawk in-nies li hemm hdejn il-karozza taht il-mini fejn hemm il-karozzi?
Xi dritt ghandu Sheehan izomm ostagg lil bniedem iehor u jheddu li jekk jitlaq ‘jahlih fuqu’!
Dan Sheehan minn fejn gab din l-arja kollha?

Min jisma r-recordings kollha jinduna li Sheehan kien fi stat hazin hafna, konfuz, gideb, u sahansitra ammetta li spara u li se jerga jispara?
Dan huwa bniedem perikoluz! Dan illum jinsab barra!
Illejla l-Prim Ministru jkollu jgieghel lil Ministru Manuel Mallia u lil Kurt Farrugia jirrezenjaw mill-aktar fis…..
Sa dan it-tant minn informazzjoni li smajt, minn fonti infurmati tajjeb, jidher li l-Prim Ministru diga kellu laqgha ma’ Mallia fejn fiha ddiskutew ir-rizenja. Mallia ma hadha xejn tajjeb……..
    Illejla tkompli s-saga Malliagate.
Sheehan ghandu jittehdulu testijiet ha naraw x’tip ta’ droga jiehu….
Kif ma jisthix Manwel Mallia u jhalli lil bintu f’idejn bniedem bhal dan…..
Fejn tkun Codruta filghaxija? Jaqaw kellha xi reception u marret timla zaqqha b’xejn…..???

Grazzi lil Daphne li taghtina spazju sabiex nesprimu dak li nhossu.

  16. Natalie Mallett says:

Mallia paved his alibi. That is the reason why the PN got the recordings.

Let’s see if they manage to get the copy of the contracts with Henley and partners, the Chinese government, and the power station now.

  17. Francis Saliba M.D. says:

Why did Sheehan not speak directly to Mallia who according to one version was in his”mifqugha” car?

  18. chico says:

    lovely song…

  19. Thaddeus says:

I assumed it was because 112 is a free service. Maybe having been around Mallia for a while Sheehan has picked up Mallia’s money saving tricks?

  20. think again says:

They both have each other’s number, if not how do they contact each other for pick up and drop offs? This is normal standard operating procedures between a minister and his driver on a daily basis.
