The Labour Party’s news website is running a 12-word bio of the new Police and Army Minister

Published: December 9, 2014 at 8:00pm

Only in Taghna Lkoll Land: Maltastar is the Labour Party’s news portal, so you’d think it would be running a fabulous bio extolling the myriad virtues and accomplishments of the new Police and Army Minister, right?

Wrong. It has a picture of Carmelo Abela being sworn in, a title, and then a report which consists of a full 12 words:

From Zejtun he has served as the Labour Whip and Government Spokesman.

Beam me up, Scotty!

i guess the whole situation has left them speechless.

    • Jack Beans says:

They’re probably on government (taxpayers’) payroll, and those who aren’t are complacent waiting for their iced bun.

      Anyway, who visits Maltastar nowadays?

  2. Mila says:

Already updated in Wiki. Does this person have a past or has he just been beamed down?

  3. pale blue my foot! says:

Carmelo Abela is a quietly spoken moderate, a devoted Labour man but certainly a gentleman and far from a pompous rabble-rouser.

He has been put there as he is the exact antithesis of Mallia and his softer image should placate critics. The question is, will he be his own man or a puppet on a string?

  4. A V says:

The less the say they better… they don’t dare say anything because each word they say is most probably a lie.

    • john says:

And will Lou Bondi tell us that he is the proud designer of the Mintoff monument unveiling ceremony?

Or does he still have a shred of remaining dignity lurking somewhere and pretend it is nothing to do with him?

    • Matthew S says:

Oh, dear God! Mintoff is going to keep spoiling our Christmases even after his death.

  5. George Grech says:

    Kemm il-Guda bisu dak is-salib?

  6. Mila says:

Ok, this is scary. This is not a ministry of candy floss and butterflies. This is a ministry which has horrified a nation by its inefficiency. A ministry pushes all its hard working, professional people who must face its rampant ‘OK siehbi’ attitude daily, into despair.

Seems like Joseph Muscat is experimenting again.

  7. FP says:

Will his salary now go down to €45,329?

    • John T says:

Appointing Carmelo Abela was Edward Scicluna’s advice – to save 73,000 euros a year towards cutting down Malta’s multi-billion debt.

  8. AV says:

Watching Muscat on One TV – his posture is so off. I am no behavioural analyst but what is going on? He looks so awkward.

  9. Makjavel says:

He also probably suffered a pay cut, unless ministers have had a large pay increase and nobody knows.

We all know what he earned monthly up to yesterday.

We all know what a minister gets paid, perks and all.

Abela oly got the bones, because the flesh went to the other two ministers.

Will Mallia leave Joseph in peace?

  10. il-Ginger says:

But Daphne … he’s from Zejtun

  11. Tye says:

    U iva mhux xorta.

  12. Christmas Pudding says:

Is it my mistaken impression that whoever helped pave the way for the dismissal of Manwel Mallia may have just been rewarded by Joseph Muscat himself ?

  13. sunshine says:

    Many things happening in Zejtun!

  14. C.G says:

In-nies staghgbu bil-mod ta’ kif mexa l-gvern u kif ittiehdu d-decizjonijiet mil-prim ministru. Gvern li ma jisthix u ministri pupazzi.

Zebilhu lil Malta, lil korp tal-Pulizija u lil min ivvotalhom.

  15. J Farrugia says:

Yeah. I hope he also finds some time to go and light the candles in church during feast days. As he is used to doing biex jidher helu ma’ n-nies taz-Zejtun.

  16. The Prince says:

If Carmelo Abela was not good enough to be even a parliamentary secretary, then why is he now be good enough to be one of the most important ministers in the cabinet?

I am sorry, but the mind boggles.

    • The Prince says:

Am I to understand that none of the current ministers is capable of taking on this ministry?

And then Carmelo Abela is another scapegoat?

Also you can see I have not actually thought it through yet.

      Some help is truly appreciated.

  17. caflanga says:

They are still underlining each keyword and trying to find a connection to why on earth, of all people, was he chosen for the role.

  18. Natalie Mallett says:

Some ministers must have had some relief with the attention focused on Manuel Mallia and the shooting saga.

What is our Prime Minister going to do about the others whose performance is not up to scratch – like Konrad Mizzi, Chris Cardona, Joe Mizzi and Helena Dalli?

They must have had a nice break. Time to focus on them now.

    • Mila says:

Ordering an inquiry and a game of musical chairs at the end seemed to work well according to him, he might try that again.

In the meantime containing his rage seems to have become a full time job.

  19. Patrik says:

It’s quite clear that this will lead to a massive shake-up within the police and any member with PN affiliations had better beware.

Great way to push out any unwanted members, replace with supporters and then announce how great they were in renewing the police force. When this is then pointed out the critics are just being negative.

    • The Prince says:

      Not entirely sure about that.

Mr Cassar is not a man to be trifled with.

But, then again I may be wrong. Just my opinion.

      • Mila says:

Having a certain sort of second in command cripples you in no time.

If Muscat had trusted Police Commissioner Cassar he would not have saddled him with disgruntled Mallia’s cousin and a siehbi fan to boot.

I’m sure this could be turned into a haiku.

  23. anthony says:

They are very judiciously keeping it short and sweet.

After only a handful of words they start lying.

    They just cannot help it.

    It is pathological.

  24. John Higgins says:

Better than a bank clerk, eh, with all that dough at his disposal.

  25. adrian says:

Carmelo Abela will now take less money home I suppose.

  26. Vincent says:

Next stop: Helena and Patrick Dalli

I stand to be corrected but these days a konvenju is a public document on which tax has been paid.

Since it is a public document, duly registered as required by law, this surely means that it is accessible for public scrutiny. So, come on guys get digging.

Also, a sanction has been applied for at MEPA. The law says that ONLY the owner of the property can apply for a sanction, and Helena Dalli and Patrick Dalli are the applicants, yet now maintaining they no longer own the property. WTF is happening here?

  27. Vincent says:

    Correction: own

  28. Antoine Vella says:

So he served as Labour whip and spokesman by staying in Zejtun. And what did he do when he was not in Zejtun?
