A reader has directed me to a news story from last July, in which the people of Zimbabwe were warned to give way to ‘state motorcades’ and cars carrying Robert Mugabe, or face prosecution.

POLICE have called on motorists to respect the movement of state motorcades failure to which they would face prosecution.

Police national spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba yesterday said motorists were required by law to give way to state motorcades as they approach. “The ZRP would like to appeal to the public, especially motorists to respect the movement of the state motorcade as outlined under Section 16 (a) (1) of Statutory Instrument number 299 of 2002,” she said.

“All motorists must pull off the road and give the right of way to the motorcade as it approaches from either direction on the road. Anyone who deliberately or negligently disturbs the movement of the motorcade will be dealt with in terms of the law.

“We encourage the public to co-operate with the ZRP details who will be maintaining law and order during the movement.”

    Says the Zimbabwean law.

Its Maltese equivalent is likely to be as follows:

“All motorists must pull off the road and give the right of way to the motorcade as it approaches from either direction on the road. Anyone who deliberately or negligently disturbs the movement of the motorcade will be shot at twice on the spot with a Glock.”
