  1. D. Borg says:

Pity that France does not offer the same “protection” it is granting to Mr. Falciani, also to the likes of Julian Assange, Edward Snowden, or Brad Manning.

Apparently taxes are more important than personal privacy and USA foreign “policy”

Uncle Sam seems too good at pulling strings, and still portray a supposedly democratic face.

  2. Kevin says:

I believe we have a right to know whether Maltese public figures are involved and who these people are. Times of Malta mentioned Tancred Tabone. By the same token, I would also like to know who the others are.

[Daphne – It wasn’t Times of Malta that ‘mentioned’ Tancred Tabone. His name was released by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. There has to be a public-interest reason for releasing names. Public curiosity isn’t one of them.]

    • Kevin says:

Mine is not curiosity for its own sake. My sole interest is knowing that tax evaders are brought to justice especially if they are people holding public office. Evasion rather than avoidance is a criminal offence and that is a public interest reason for releasing the names. Or not?

[Daphne – Of course not. There are privacy issues involved. You can’t release a person’s name and bank account to the general public solely on the basis that they are a public person. The requirement is disclosure to the tax authorities when asked, and not disclosure to the general public. Ma tarax. Public interest issues come into play when it is evident that, say, a politician has been using the system to conceal illicit money, for example – gained through corruption, or when it might be the proceeds of crime.]
