The man sitting behind the Labour leader and in front of a ‘Malta Ottimista’ backdrop, wearing a striped tie, is called Tony Amaira. He was managing director of Untours Insurance Agents Ltd, which is owned by the General Workers Union, but was given severance pay and made to leave quietly after he harassed other GWU employees who were his subordinates.
The Labour Party was elected to government shortly afterwards and he was dumped on the state payroll as a member of the private secretariat of Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Buontempo.
