The Labour Party’s deputy leader, Toni Abela, was fined for contempt of court today when he failed to show up for a hearing in the criminal court, leaving his client to inform the court herself that he is away from the island. Readers of this website know that to be true. I reported yesterday that he was spotted on the morning flight to Rome, conspicuously pretending not to be travelling with Judge Wenzu Mintoff. The magistrate was justifiably angry because he dragged his client there for nothing and wasted court time, because he didn’t even bother to file the necessary application to the court, requesting for that the hearing be put off to another day because of his unavoidable absence from Malta.
