Let’s now turn our thoughts to migrating humans

Italian forces, aided by merchant ships, a ship from the Icelandic navy and the Maltese army, have rescued around 10,000 migrants in 50 operations off Libya in the last week alone.

More than 400 are feared dead over the same few days after their boat capsized. And those are just the ones we know about.

Times of Malta has published a photograph showing the corpse of a boy aged two or three, washed up on a Libyan beach along with many other dead people. A Libyan coastguard to whom Times of Malta spoke said that dealing with bodies washed up on the beaches is now routine. “When you get the children, that’s the worst,” he said.

The whole thing is horrific. These are people. PEOPLE. That little boy was somebody’s child and his parents took the only decision they could, thinking it for the best. Now they are all dead, the result of cruelty and exploitation, and their own desperation.
