Toni Abela genuinely does not understand the concept of ethics, conflict of interest etc.

In the early 90s, while still part of the Alternattiva Demokratika leadership, he was also the legal adviser of the Quarry Owners Association.

Can you believe that? I wonder if he still is.

When limits on usage of concrete began to be relaxed, the obvious consequence would be a lesser need of the environmental damage caused by quarries – and more damage by concrete batching plants, of course.

The quarry owners did not like this, and organised protests, blocking the roads with their trucks and causing traffic mayhem.

With hindsight, it was pretty much what we have today. The co-ordinator of this activity was, you guessed it, Toni Abela.

So we had the leadership of an anti-monopoly and pro-environment party co-coordinating the protest activities of an anti-environmental monopoly.

When it was subsequently explained to him that this was wrong and could lead to people being put off voting for AD, he was completely at a loss to understand this principle.

The ‘blokka silg’ came as no surprise.
