Maltese man caught in Libya with €300,000 cash runs business out of social housing flat in Birzebbuga

Carmelo aka Charles Grech, who is described in the press as a ‘sea captain’ who ferried aid during the Libyan revolution, but who is really nothing more than a shifty fixer, runs a business called Gulf Fisheries Ltd out of the social housing flat in Birzebbuga where he lives.

Press reports say that Grech was caught in Libya two weeks ago carrying €300,000 while attempting to board a plane in the company of a Jordanian and two Algerians. He was detained, the same sources said, by the anti-Islamist faction.

The other shareholders in the business are Grech’s wife Dorothy and their sons Darren, 35, and Ian Mark, 26, all of whom are registered as living at the same social housing flat.

The company was incorporated in 2007 and has a share capital of €75,000.
