The Department of Information at the Office of the Prime Minister has released these photographs of the prime minister, his health and energy minister, and various aides in black ties as they meet the Vice President of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič. The deputy prime minister, in his blue tie, is the exception.

The prime minister’s tie is not just black, but it is also very shiny. Do these details matter? Yes, actually they do. As we have seen, somebody who doesn’t pay attention to the suitability of his tie is not going to bother about holes, large and small, being drilled all over the façade of his historic office building to accommodate a party donor and activist who was the sole bidder for a 300,000-euro lighting tender.
