“Never have we needed diplomacy more. Instead we have Boris Johnson.”

Just two weeks ago, when Theresa May launched her bid for the Tory leadership, with Johnson still a contender in the race, she commented: “Boris negotiated in Europe. I seem to remember last time he did a deal with the Germans, he came back with three nearly new water cannon.”

Now she has made him Foreign Secretary.
