Does anyone know what Karmenu Vella means?

Back in 1981, I never thought I would be sitting around in 2011 reading that the 2013 electoral programme is going to be written by Il-Guy from KMB's cabinet of horrors.

“My role is to ensure the manifesto is consistent in its writing, ideas and direction. For example, if finance and economy are allowed to go separate ways it raises the question as to what priority the party will adopt if elected to government.”

– Karmenu Vella, quoted speaking about his electoral programme plans in The Times today

This ”guy” was caught smuggling goods on his yacht in Ghadira Bay when he was a cabinet minister. He was found guilty and fined. He pleaded that he did not know the law. His colleague at the time was Labour MP Johnny Dalli, Helena’s brother-in-law, who was caught unloading stuff from his yacht at 4pm.

I know because I saw the smuggling experience. Now I wonder whether he will be advising Joseph Muscat on tax evasion. There was a generally overlooked piece of news, before the 2008 general election, that both Il-Guy and Charles Mangion had failed to declare to the Inland Revenue income from flats which they rented out.

If this is the best person that Muscat could find to write his electoral programme and help him with his finances, then help us God.

Could you post a copy of the court judgment please?

They unloaded the contraband at the Tunny net restaurant (Dalli owned it at the time) which was turned into a TV and VCR outlet ‘min fejn setghu jixtru il-hbieb’.

Both luxury cabin cruisers used to be moored by the restaurant at the time.

Dalli’s was turned into a club at night: when the cat was away.

I have no idea what the hell that statement meant. I’ll give him some benefit of the doubt as I do not trust The Times reporters to make sense.

Also, this man held a top job with a successful company (to the best of my knowledge). Hopefully that means he can think strategically. I don’t know…this might just be a good move by Joseph.

Or maybe there is a lot more that I don’t know about this man…in that case, illuminate me!

    • Kukkudrill says:

I’ll illuminate you. The corporation which gave Karmenu Vella that consultancy – not job – also gave one to John Dalli from the other side of the political fence (or at least, he was on the other side then).

So I think something other than impressive skills and ability were involved in qualifying them for the post, don’t you?

      • R. Camilleri says:

Well, the same can be said about any politician that ventures into the world of private enterprise. Just using that logic, the moment a person enters the political field he can never be credible in the corporate world.

I don’t think that that alone is a valid point.

      • Stefan Vella says:

You do not become somebody in the corporate world by being stupid.

Renouncing a corporate salary and associated benefits to enter a miniscule island’s political arena for a miserable 20K-70K salary is stupid, at least in my books.

Maybe he could also tell us who was driving his car on the night of 6th December 1986

Look. There’s certainly no love lost between me and the Labour party…however, I believe that as far as Ministers responsible for Tourism go, Karmenu Vella was the best we ever had for the industry. I think that any operator worth his salt will tell you that….

So it’s not really my opinion…

[Daphne – He was only there for 22 months, for God’s sake. Let’s get a sense of perspective on this.]

The fact that they had to resort to Karemnu Vella proves that Labour is completely void of ‘intellectual diversity’.

The new deputies and party officials are byproducts of the previous generation, so might as well ask an ex minister from the 80s. Their leader is the epitome of the situation. He has never worked in a productive industry.

His father paid for his accommodation while he studied, while Mario Vella, Godfrey Grima, George Vella and Alfred Sant planned out his political career. Super One is his only work experience, if you can call that a job.

The MLP can change its name, logo, and even the leader. In order to be trendy, they introduce pink quotas and quotas for the newer generation. But the thing that really counts -intellectual diversity – remains missing. The lack of internal debate on any subject or policy is proof of this absence.
