Aditus Foundation reminds us that ‘treating’ is a crime under Maltese law

When politicians and party candidates give potential voters food, drink, entertainment or gifts, it is a crime called ‘treating’ and should be reported to the police. Here in Malta we just take it for granted.

The Aditus Foundation has started raising awareness of this online, encouraging people to file reports with the police if they are offered food and drink by electoral candidates.

It says it will be sharing this picture across its social media, and adds in a release to the press: “Following last week’s statement, where we criticised the way democracy is treated in Malta, this week we are reminding the nation that a vote is not a commodity that can be bought or sold.

“It is a fundamental human right that should be respected and protected. Although Malta does have legislation in place attempting to ensure a dignified and respecting electoral process, this law seems to be ignored. This picture is a reminder.”
