About time too although most of the reforms won’t take place for another generation! Let’s hope that this makes it to the statute book this Parliamentary session and without being watered down any more. Anyone out there receiving Lm200 rent a year for prime commercial property in Sliema and other commercial centers not to mention Lm6 a year for townhouses on the Strand will be heaving a sigh of relief. Not to mention friends of mine who get 2 cents a year for fields they own in Zebbug. Only in Malta.

  2. Daphne Caruana Galizia says:

Yes, but I don’t think it’s still justifiable in this day and age to allow security of tenure to the ‘children’ of the original lease-holder. Why are these ‘children’ exempted from having to do what the rest of us have to do, which is to find our own place to live when we grow up, even if it means working and taking out a loan to pay for it? What incentive do these lazy so-and-sos have to leave their virtually-free housing? If they are subject to an assessment of their income, they will simply work out the costings and conclude that it pays them to take on a low-paying job and keep their free house than to take a higher-paying job and end up having to pay most of it out on monthly installments to the bank.

The reasoning of nature’s bums is completely different to the reasoning of pro-active individuals. Unfortunately, white papers, laws and so on are conceived and enacted by pro-active individuals, who clearly aren’t putting themselves into the mind of a lazy bum.

  3. Mario Debono says:

Daphne, your line of reasoning is very correct. This is precisely why i think that this white paper fails from the very start. It will continue promulgating this injustice. I have had all manner of telephone calls due to my posting of what I think of this white paper on your blog. Didnt know how widely it was read.

  4. Corinne Vella says:

I hope that the owners of property ‘let’ to political parties are going to make a lot of noise about their continuing deprivation of their right to the enjoyment of their property, and that the owners of property let out to ‘social clubs’ will do the same.
