Pearls of wisdom from Labour's bog-roll
This story in today’s edition of the Labour Party’s amazingly erudite newspaper is all about the nasty meanies who have rubbished Joseph Muscat’s suggestion that 16-year-olds be given the vote. Andrew Borg-Cardona brought it to my attention because he knows that I prefer The Sunday Telegraph. And guess what? KullHadd has invented a new word – ‘bloggs’, with Maltese spelling but the English plural, unless they’ve confused it with that nice man Joe Bloggs. Do the national language police approve?
Jahasra miskin Joseph x’gharukaza dejjem jghidu kontrih ghax jghiru ghax ma jarawx x’jaghmlu huma imisshom jisthu jekk jafu jisthu ahjar ma nghid xejn miskin daqs kemm hu gustuz jghiru ghalih zgur ghax taghhom muhiex bhalu j’Alla ikollhom wiehed bhal Joseph ghandhom cans u kemm hu bravu b’dawk id-dikris seta sar professur jew maniger ta’ kumpanija kbira jahasra miskin dawk ghax jghiru ghax zghir u intelligenti mhux bhalhom jaqq qabda zibel laqas biss jafu jisthu
No dots, no crossed aitches and still you could read it. Isn’t that amazing?
Reazzjoni konfuza ghall-ahhar mill-PN
KullHadd, 8/24/2008 8:06:59 AM
Din il-gimgha spikkat ir-reazzjoni ghal darba’ohra konfuza ghall-ahhar u minghajr ebda direzzjoni minn naha ta’ l-istrategisti tal-PN ghall-proposta tal-Mexxej Laburista Joseph Muscat biex l-età tal-vot fl-elezzjonijiet tal-Kunsilli Lokali tinzel ghal 16-il sena.
B’mod immedjat, wara li nhar it-Tnejn deher f’The Times l-artiklu ta’ Joseph Muscat fejn tressqet din il-proposta, bhas-soltu l-istrategisti tal-PN taw bidu ghal kampanja ta’ attakki u ta’ kritika.
KullHadd huwa informat li l-ewwel decizjoni kienet li ma kienx jaqbel li l-PN jidher li kien hu li b’mod ufficcjali qieghed imexxi din il-kampanja.
Ghaldaqstant, l-attakki saru fil-bloggs fuq l-internet minn opinjonisti maghrufa ghall-kritika harxa taghhom kontra kull haga li ghandha x’taqsam mal-Partit Laburista, fosthom Daphne Caruana Galizia u Andrew Borg Cardona.
Caruana Galizia minbarra li ddeskrivit liz-zghazagh ta’ 16- il sena bhala nies li jkunu ghandhom ma jistghux jahsbu, qabblet lil Joseph Muscat ma’ traffikanti tad-droga u ma’ dawk li jimmanifatturaw is-sigaretti u l-alkohol ghaz-zghazagh ghalx skond hi, il-Mexxej Laburista jaf li l-eta ta’ 16-il sena, hija età krucjali biex iz-zghazagh jaqbdu dawk li sejhet bhala vizzji hziena hafna. Andrew Borg Cardona minn naha tieghu sejjah il-proposta li l-età tal-vot fl-elezzjonijiet tal-Kunsilli Lokali tinzel ghal 16-il sena bhala superficjali u li ghalkemm tinstema’ sabiha, m’ghandha ebda bazi.
Minkejja din l-istrategija negattiva minn naha tal-PN, ir-reazzjonijiet tal-pubbliku, specjalment taz-zghazagh u l-ghaqdiet taghhom, ghall-proposta tal-Mexxej Laburista kienu mill-iktar pozittivi. Mill-informazzjoni li ghandu KullHadd jirrizulta li quddiem dan kollu, l-istrategisti Nazzjonalisti kellhom ibiddlu l-attitudni taghhom u minflok qablu li l-PN ghandu jipprova jiehu, b’mod ufficjali, permezz tal-fergha taz-zghazagh tieghu, l-MZPN, il-krettu ghal dak li kiteb Joseph Muscat f’The Times. Biex jippruvaw isewwu l-hsara li inholqitilhom bil-kritika ta’ Caruana Galizia u Borg Cardona, l-istrategisti tal-PN nhar it-Tlieta ippruvaw jaghmlu uzu anki mill-ahbarijiet tal-PBS.
Nhar il-Gimgha imbaghad kien ippublikat fil-gurnal The Times artiklu tal-Ministru Dolores Cristina, il-Ministru responsabbli miz-zghazagh, li fih din harget tiddikjara ruhha assolutament favur il-proposta ta’ Joseph Muscat li l-età tal-vot fl-elezzjonijiet lokali tinzel ghal 16. Dan l-artiklu kien mahsub biss biex tissewwa l-hsara li saret lill-PN bl-attakki ta’ Caruana Galizia u ta’ Borg Cradona, wara li l-kitbiet ta’ dawn kienu interpretati minn hafna zghazagh bhala nuqqas ta’ fiducja fihom minn naha tal-PN.
Madankollu anki l-artiklu tal-Ministru Cristina kompla hareg fil-berah ir-reazzjoni konfuza tal-PN ghall-proposta ta’ Joseph Muscat. U dan ghaliex waqt li Dolores Cristina kitbet li l-proposta tal-Mexxej Laburista minghajr dubju se tkun taghmel parti mir-riforma li l-gvern Nazzjonalista qed ihejji fix-xhur li gejjin ghall-Kunsilli Lokali, mhux l-istess kienu kkwotati jghidu sorsi qrib il-gvern Nazzjonalista fl-ahbarijiet tal-PBS ta’ nhar it-Tlieta.
Ghall-kuntrarju l-PBS ikkwota lil dawn is-sorsi jghidu li l-proposta biex l-età tal-vot ghall-elezzjonijiet tal-Kunsilli Lokali tinzel ghal 16-il sena ma kinitx mal-hafna proposti li l-gvern ircieva ghar-riforma tal-Kunsilli Lokali. KullHadd huwa informat li fil-verità originarjament il-gvern Nazzjonalista ma kellu ebda hsieb li fir-riforma tal-Kunsilli Lokali jitkellem dwar l-età tal-vot, izda jidher li issa qed jikkunsidra li jiccaqlaq b’rizultat tal-proposta tal-Mexxej Laburista.
Osservaturi li tkellmu ma’ KullHadd qalu li dan kollu huwa konferma ohra ta’ kemm il-PN jinsab b’dahru mal-hajt quddiem din l-ahhar proposta tal-Mexxej Laburista. L-istess osservaturi sostnew li ghal darba ohra jidher car li l-istrategisti tal-Partit Nazzjonalista ghadhom ma jistghux isibu tarf ta’ l-attitudni pozittiva li qed jixmi biha Joseph Muscat, li b’semplici artiklu f’The Times qabad lill-imhuh tal-PN fuq sieq wahda.

Hi Daphne,
When are you going to write an article about Clyde Puli’s long holiday in beijing paid from our pockets? Isn’t it interesting? And what about his family? They were there, right? Who paid for their holiday?
mmmm Daphne, I think that would be a very interesting article.
[Daphne – Nice one, Hope. It’s been done already. Tell me something, did you work on the Labour Party’s electoral programme for 2008?]
LOL Daphne re your reply to hope who incidentally has no hope in hell to be quick on the uptake
Dunno who this Hope person is – do you think it could be Peter Muscat or Jo Said again? The level of stupidity militates towards that conclusion.
[Daphne – It’s not. It sounds more like one of those youngish Labour types who are deluded that they’re hip and edgy…you know, like Kurt Farrugia and Robert Francalanza.]
or Gowzef Daph and ABC…Mr Hip ‘n’ Edgy himself
@ABC AND Daphne. I wouldnt be surprised if Toni decides to take all who dared mock the Great White Hope of the MLP to court . Will u defend us ABC :)
As for Hope, well, its an elf thing isnt it?
@hope
Is making a fool of oneself on the WorldWideWeb a new national hobby for mlp apologists?
Tru, Defni. U du not nijd eni speshill marks to understend. Well dun.
[Daphne – There’s a difference between spelling words correctly and putting distinguishing marks on letters, and your example merely serves to prove the point: it’s DAphne, with a flat A, and not Defni with a Maltese A. Same for ‘Any’ not Eni’, and for ‘understAnd’ not ‘understEnd. ‘Nijd’ can’t be pronounced in English, because there is a missing vowel between the j and d, and even if you insert a vowel, j is pronounced like the Maltese g bit-tikka. The ‘cial’ in ‘special’ is not pronounced as ‘shill’.]
Will they now attack Lino Spiteri for also writing against the proposal..will he become a PN strategist or a PN blogger according to KullHadd (the paper, not the literal translation everybody)
“… qabad lill-imhuh tal-PN fuq sieq wahda.”
What an awful mixed metaphor!
@ Fausto Majistral Lill-imhuh means the people who do the thinking, in Maltese imhuh is used in that way, that is not a metaphor it is an expression. Which more or less means- he caught the leaders of the PN unprepared.
[Daphne – Not really. Mhuh is used in exactly the same way as the English reference to ‘brains’, as in ‘the brains behind that plan’. KullHadd’s phrase translates as ‘he caught the brains of the PN on one leg’ – fascinating.]
@ Daphne Now you are better than me in English, because you use it everyday, whilst I use Maltese everyday, “qabad fuq sieq wahda” is an everyday expression which means caught unprepared. For example, I use it when my son, whose 15, asks for a lift and I’m short on petrol, so I say ” Sorry qbadtni fuq sieq wahda ghax m’ghandiex petrol bissejjed”. Imhuh does mean brains, but the brains of PN are the people who do the thinking or planing. Like you’re the brains of this blogg.
If we let 16-year-olds vote, ‘because they are mature’, will we also make it legal for them to drive, smoke, drink alcohol and do all the things that adults do?
Every phase of life has its own character and people ought to live the role appropriate for their age. Just as it is ridiculous for an adult to behave like a teenager, so is it unfair to try and push teenagers into premature adulthood. It becomes even more irresponsible when it is proposed frivolously as a political gimmick.
How much thought has Joseph really given this and whom has he consulted? I fear we could be back to the impromptu politics that had characterised Sant’s leadership.
Worker – Shouldn’t that have been “petlor” in Maltese? :)
@ Ananda Mallia Actually I think in Maltese it’s “pitlor” derived from “pitlorju” or vice versa.
Well, Antoine, as far as I know, 16 year olds can already smoke and drink alcohol legally.
According to Labour, the biggest problem in Malta in the summer of ’08 is that young people cannot vote in Local Council elections if they’re 16 or 17.
Isn’t it actually great to have such extremely minor problems in Malta nowadays?
@K
They cannot buy alcohol or cigarettes though because they are not considered adults.
@ Worker
biZZejed u mhux biSSejjed
I agree to mlp’s stance on this as long as they give the right to 16 year olds to drive to go into clubs (legally), etc etc. If the mlp’s argument holds any water (i.e.) that a 16 year old is ‘big/mature’ enough to vote, than why dont get them to drive or give blood without the parents approval, or marry for that matter. But hold on…I beleive there is a spin in this! Don’t you think its possible that the KullHadd and l-Orizont title page on the day after the election would be MLP izidu fil voti (imma jitilfu lelezzjoni ghal darb ohra) HEHEHEHE. They wouldn’t be lying! Insomma please be aware, the MLP is not going to repeat the Mistake JM made during the last elections. This time he is going to count the new voters, but maybe the calculator wont work again!

I’ve got a speech defect – I don’t sound the zz in Maltese. What are you a typing instructor? Couldn’t you tell it was a typing error? – don’t not dont, parents’ not parents shall I go on?
