Here are some people who won't be manifesting with Joseph

Our man Joseph would have loved to march side by side at his ‘manifestation’ with the president of the Chamber of Commerce. Looks like it’s not going to happen, and he’ll have to make do with Anglu, minus the elephant. By the way, where’s Jason? It’s been ages since he last appeared in public glued to Muscat’s hip-bone. Somewhere in a cage deep inside the party headquarters, there’s a lot of squawking going on.

Businesses urged to maximise energy efficiency

The Chamber of Commerce has urged the business community to maximise energy efficiency and consider investment that leads to the generation of alternative energy sources and/or more energy-efficient operating methods. It said in a statement that it will shortly be launching an EU-funded project to enable energy audits and mentoring to businesses aimed at eliminating wastage and enhancing energy efficient processes. The project will result in significant cost reductions for local business, which savings could be redirected towards investment in renewable energy sources and towards enhancing further competitiveness, the chamber said.

The chamber said that during the past weeks it pressed hard for proper consultation to take place on the utility tariffs. “It did so mostly behind the scenes and this approach was respected by the authorities and ultimately vindicated,” the chamber said. The guiding principle behind its recommendations was that at this present time, the country as a whole could not afford to compromise investment and employment opportunities with sudden policy changes that did not give sufficient notice to entrepreneurs to plan accordingly. It gave a number of practical recommendations which the authorities took notice of.
The chamber said the arguments it had made convinced the government to modify its proposals and to render them slightly more workable for industry and the business community.

“Within the tight financial constraints and pressures to eliminate subsidies almost completely, the Chamber is convinced that it managed to obtain as much cushioning as possible,” the chamber said, adding that the cost to all operators and society was still going to increase.

  1. Mario Debono says:

I believe the Chamber of Commerce supported the capping of electricity for major businesses at the expense of small businesses, did it not?

Capping is unfair for us small businesses.

Mario – it is also unfair that we, the household consumers have to pay for others. I quite understand that eventually the water and electricity rates have to go up due to the price of oil and current world situation. However, I would like someone to answer the following questions please:
    1. Is something being done or going to be done regarding the inefficiences, over-staffing, etc. at Enemalta ?
    2. Why is it OK for Enemalta not to present audited accounts but private companies are bound to do so?
    3. What about the stealing of electricity, tampering with water meters, by certain individuals, etc. ?
    4. An idea could be that Enemalta changes and instals the type of water meters where one can just insert a prepaid card which one could eventually top up thereby paying immediately for the electricity rates (I do not know whether this can be done in the case of water consumption). Enemalta would in this way have money readily on hand and there would be better control.
