Hey, Astrid – I've received a message from one of your fans

Published: February 16, 2009 at 1:36pm

I wouldn’t ordinarily upload a comment like this. But I think it’s important for Astrid and the petite-bourgeoisie of Sliema to know what sort of support they have. Some months ago, I said I would upload the IP numbers of those who post violent comments on this blog, and I’m sticking to it.

So, I normally don’t have an opinion about these issues, and as a matter of fact, I don’t have an opinion on the vault- beneath-the-square issue.

To be honest, I wasn’t following the saga from the beginning as I originally found it quite boring. I only started reading about this ‘national tantrum’ a few weeks ago, and judging by the reports in Malta Today (which is practically the modern English version of the 1990s now-defunct newspaper L-Alternattiva), and the messages sent to the FAA Facebook group (from which I recently unsubscribed), and comments, this issue seems to have nothing to do with the cathedral at all.

This seems to be a show of force from a handful of disgruntled PN backbenchers – in particular Pullicino Orlando – grinding their axe against Richard Cachia Caruana, and showing Gonzi that he needs them if he intends to govern for the full term.

The vault was just an excuse. However, this raises one (possibly) rhetorical question: who rode on whose back? The PN backbenchers on the FAA/Labour/AD/MaltaToday team or vice-versa? Who knows?

  2. Ivan Falzon says:

Shame on people like Mr DeMartino. They do undermine their work, with their only-my-opinion-counts attitude.

[Daphne – I very much doubt that’s his real name. All the De Martinos I know are respectable.]

  3. Tony Pace says:

What ”classy’ friends Astrid Vella has. I am so so impressed. Ghandek cans nifferma xi petixin. Well as I always say ”what goes around comes around”!

[Daphne – The poor sheltered lass hasn’t yet realised that when you sup with the devil, you need a l-o-n-g spoon.]

  4. Mario Debono says:

Funny, I posted a perfectly civilised comment on The Times website today. As usual, if it’s anti-Astrid, they don’t get it. Maybe they can get the disgusting comment posted to you instead of mine……

  5. me says:

Would it be Triq iz-Zaghfran, Attard?

  6. Ivan M. Dingli says:

Dear Daphne, I don’t always share your same views but I wouldn’t send such a comment even though sometimes you do piss me off! Have a nice day sabiha (forsi npatti ftit ghal dak li qallek De Martino)

  7. Tonio Farrugia says:

213.165.166.82 is a Melita Cable subscriber

  8. Arthur D. says:

That ip address resolves to a location in Attard. Although not 100% accurate (it depends on how often the respective ISPs update their location registry), this site is adequate enough to find out towns from IP addresses.

    http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/213.165.166.82

[Daphne – Oh, I only posted it so that Melita would know that one of its subscribers is making illegal use of its service. Sending that kind of comment by mail, telephone or internet is a criminal offence.]

Don’t mind him, Daphne. If there’s one thing you’re not it’s ugly. I would rate you 8/10 in “hot or not” (and I’m usually quite mean with my scores).

[Daphne – Thanks. I know I’m not. Nobody in my extended family on either side is ugly, so I would have been a genetic freak if I were. It’s part of the defamation process: to undermine a woman’s credibility, they portray her as ugly, because they have no way of tackling her arguments. Go figure. You should see the looks on the faces of some hard-core Laburisti when they see me in real life and discover for the first time that I don’t have facial warts or a pointy hat.]

  10. Harry Purdie says:

Disgusting, but clearly depicts how this mob operates.

  11. David Buttigieg says:

Actually, someone with a little IT know-how COULD hide/fake an IP address – perhaps I shouldn’t suggest how myself but it’s quite easily done, although police forces have ways of counteracting most (but not the simplest) methods!

This guy however sounds too stupid to type let alone know how! Who was having sex with a horse’s face?

  12. Steve says:

What? You don’t have facial warts or a pointy hat? What next? You’ll be telling us you don’t have a broom! LOL

Why is it that when someone doesn’t like or agree with a woman, she is automatically assumed to be ugly? I think it’s because it’s impossible for us men not to like an attractive woman (ergo, if I don;t like a woman, she must not be attractive), and with women, it just makes them feel better if the person they don’t like is less attractive than they are! We are a funny animal!

  13. Hi Daphne,

Although you probably don’t need me to tell you but just ignore posts like that. Guys like this deserve no attention whatsoever and have my full condemnation . . . oh dear, have I become a censor myself now?

    Well . . .

  14. M.Farrugia says:

My first comment on your blog but am an avid reader from day 1. I put you on RSS feed! I agree 100% re FAA. They have basically taken over the environmental agenda of Malta and they criticise anybody who does not agree with them. I was approached by my friend to contribute to their advert on TheTimes and to sign their petition and I refused. For this, I was called “a PN ifissat” even if I do not agree 100% with what the Nationalist Party does.

It’s quite a pity that in this country everything has to be politicised, but that is a legacy which good old Dom left us.

A few hundred people cannot decide what this country does and Dr Gonzi should send them to hell. Most of these environmentalists did not vote PN and will not vote PN, for the simple reason that they are leftist or have an agenda that does not agree with the PN’s.

Thank You for your blo. I really enjoy it, and the person who left that comment is basically what we will get when Labour come to power. Success unfortunately breeds resentment all the time. If they can’t beat you, they will attack you personally or people close to you. Please keep the blog going, Daphne. I really enjoy it!

  15. Tony Pace says:

Well done, guys. This creep must be regretting the day he posted his vile and cowardly comment. Let’s go down a bit to his level now, ‘‘Aw Demartino ja helu, c u ta’….bhas soltu ghand Jessie tal Cairo bar…… u jekk ma narakx, see you later”

  16. Ivan M. Dingli says:

    @ M. Farrugia

Please do not generalise regards Labour supporters. Both parties have their good and bad guys. Daphne had the decency to state ‘hard-core Laburisti’ when she gave her view of certain categories of persons. I come from a Labour family and certain comments do hurt even though I might not share my parents’ views on certain political matters.

  17. Andrea says:

Oh, the magic trick. A midget has to depress the giant to feel raised. Just an illusion though!

  18. My name is Leonard my son’s getting married and he still calls me Joey says:

Wow, that one missed Valentine’s Day by a couple of days. Not sure that whoever typed the message is downright stupid; no caps and not a single exclamation mark. Anyway, you’re in good company here. Some men cannot stomach the fact that a woman has a bit more brains than they do and have the cheek to look attractive.

  19. Anna says:

Daphne, I always thought that the Maltese are so creative when it comes to swearing, bad language etc. Honestly, try and translate Mr. De Martino’s message into English, or any other language for that matter, and it just cannot be done. Please do keep on uploading these kind of messages, maybe with a little pre-warning for the faint-hearted to stop reading. They sure keep us amused!

  20. Frank says:

………Why do I have this feeling that whoever posted that ridiculous comment MUST be female and surely NOT male as most respondents seem to be convinced ? …… I am very rarely wrong….. I got to know of quite a few real cases of ‘drowning in one’s own blood’ since last March……

  21. Tim Ripard says:

Didn’t know you were ‘rent’. I love the blog and I’m sure you won’t let scum like this disturb you but, for the record, you have my moral support.

  22. Amanda Mallia says:

Everyone’s assuming that the comment was posted by a man, and that “De Martino” is his true surname. Whilst I would hazard a guess that the surname is fake (the De Martinos are pretty decent and mostly – if not all – pro-PN), I would bet that the first name too is a fake, as in that the comment was posted by a woman.

  23. Tony Pace says:

I know a few of Astrid Vella’s supporters (including her ‘experts’) and if I were her, I would be so disappointed that NOT ONE has as much as bothered to post anything in her defence. Oh well, perhaps ginger-boy will.

[Daphne – Perhaps they realise what an imbroglio they got themselves into, by trying to play Che Guevara from their middle-aged flats in Tower Road. Which reminds me that I’ve been meaning to say this: how bloody easy it is to be an ‘environmentalist’ in Malta in 2009, when you get treated with little more than benign tolerance and a few harsh words on a blog. I don’t remember seeing Astrid Vella at any Zaghzagh Ghall-Ambjent demonstrations in the early 1980s, though many of her contemporaries were there, getting beaten to the point of hospitalisation. Not just a fibber but a coward, too. Freedom-fighter my eye. And as for those people who put their names to her advertisement in The Times – wow, how brave, standing up to Lawrence Gonzi the Monster and Richard Cachia Caruana the Evil Wizard. I wonder whether they had the guts to put their names to any ‘I believe Peter Paul Busuttil was innocent’ advertisements in the same newspaper back in the Dark Ages, because I don’t remember seeing them. Ahjar ma’ nghid xejn. Why don’t they go and whitewash a couple of orphanages or do something useful with their time…l-aqwa l-posturing, halli nkunu nistghu neqirdu f’xi dinner party dwar kif ‘the people have spoken’.]

  25. Tony Pace says:

U ejja, I cannot believe it. Has anyone been on the FAA website? Last post on their highly entertaining message board was March 13th LAST year. Now that’s what I call serious debate. And for a grand finale, please take a look at the pics of their bingo fund-raising night April LAST year. What a bunch of tal-pepe losers and champagne socialists! http://www.ambjentahjar.org/photos.htm

[Daphne – Yes, a real hotbed of populist rebellion. Suggested fund-raising events: tennis tournament at the Marsa Club, bridge tournament at the Union Club and after that, a ballu tal-karnival at the Kazin Malti.]

  26. Tony Pace says:

”ghax ha nghidlek Mery, arukaza, toqba taht San gwann jonqosna”. Kont se nghidilha fejn se jaghmluha t-toqba.

A dear friend of mine apparently starts off his day by each and every morning telling his wife, ”Darling, it’s all over. Malta’s finished”…….Well, blow me, I’m just about to start agreeing with him. So thank you D, for giving us some hope!

  27. Antoine Vella says:

    Daphne
“how bloody easy it is to be an ‘environmentalist’ in Malta in 2009, when you get treated with little more than benign tolerance and a few harsh words on a blog.”

They are getting a few harsh words from you but certainly not from Gonzipn, as the elves like to refer to the government. FAA are getting a full-time project manager paid entirely out of public funds (i.e. out of our taxes). That is how much Gonzipn is dictatorial and anti-democratic. Can you imagine the MLP of Sant or the PL of Muscat doing the same?

[Daphne – Please furnish me with the details. Astrid Vella loves to repeat that she does it all on a voluntary basis and doesn’t receive a cent, and we are subjected to her regular protests about things being paid for out of public funds. Are you telling me that Mrs Vella will now have a salary paid for out of our taxes?]

  28. Tony Pace says:

Click on this link guys for a truly enlightening 20 minutes. Astrid, there are SOME crusades worth getting passionate about, and yours was not one of them.
    http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/isabel_allende_tells_tales_of_passion.html

(Hi Daphne, sorry for splitting posts, perhaps you would kindly link the above two. Thank you.)

  29. David Buttigieg says:

” Are you telling me that Mrs Vella will now have a salary paid for out of our taxes?”

Actually yes come to think of it, at least I saw an ad calling for a project manager to be seconded from the civil service!

  30. Leo Said says:

Daphne remarks – Are you telling me that Mrs Vella will now have a salary paid for out of our taxes?

Now, now, Daphne, are there not others in a similar boat?

Such practice is unfortunately global in character.
