I bet you've never seen anything so amazing

I bet you've never seen anything so amazing

Some people really need to take advantage of those cheap flights get out a bit more. There’s a Facebook group calling for signatures to ‘put Azure Window as one of the new seven Wonders of the World’.

How they could even begin to think of it as a ‘wonder’ is quite beyond me. If they don’t want to travel, perhaps they could try tuning in to the National Geographic channel.

But just in case you’re interested, or want to sign on for a laugh:

Let us put Azure Window as one of the new seven Wonders of the World

The official global website of New7Wonders is promoting the Azure Window to be nominated as one of the new seven wonders of the World. San Lawrenz Local Council and the Goverment of Malta is supporting this nomination. Trough this Group we are gently asking you to vote for this nomination and invite your friends to vote on this link http://www.new7wonders.com/nature/en/nominees/europe/c/AzureWindow/

I absolutely don’t think it’s one of the wonders of the world, but I’d look at this initiative as a creative (?) way to promote your locality for free.

    We are gently asking…sigh..

…nor should the statue of Christ Redeemer in Rio de Janiero be one of the seven wonders. Nothing to do with religion, but actually the statue is pretty small. Surely the Statue of Liberty should be one. It’s an amazing gem, where you could climb into the crown for a vista of New York.

  4. Scerri S says:

It may not be one of the new seven wonders but its not such a bad proposal when considering Ireland is promoting a cliff range, for example.

The Azure Window is not unique, not even on Gozo. There is another “window” further north of Dwejra, at the end of Wied Mielah … but that would be in Gharb, not San Lawrenz.

Exactly. Was very surprised when I came across the one in Għarb, because I had never heard of it – and yet such a fuss is made of the other ‘window’ at Dwejra.

  6. Tonio says:

The Azure Window is definitely a landmark in Gozo. I agree that you cannot compare it with the other, more famous Wonders. I voted for it as I feel we should take every opportunity to promote our islands.

To me this is one of the best examples of the remnants of Mintoffianism.(We may call it post-Mintoffianism.) It is not my intention to go into the merits of the things Mintoff did in this post, be they positive or negative, but he surely did convince the weaker (and more ignorant) members of our society that they were above everyone, that they are ‘tal-life’ and that Maltese people enjoyed some superior status, be it genetic, cultural or geographical, (maybe even phallical), or just that they were Mintoffian.

The saddest part is not that are victims of their own very ridiculous and self-determing convictions or that they will never change their views till death do them part but rather that other (more) free-thinking, balanced social creatures have to share this overly claustrophic space called Malta with them. Hence blogs such as this.

Isn’t Angelik a bigger wonder than a bit of rock? Vomiting thorns and all that. The cliffs of Moher have nothing on Angelik, I tell you. They should propose him: a living, breathing, eating (especially eating) wonder.

  9. Lawrence says:

Why don’t we suggest Borg in-Nadur for this as well?
