"I'm sticking up for Jose because his sister is my mistress – but don't tell anyone"

I’m sure there were lots of people who were surprised when Robert Musumeci stuck his neck out to defend Jose Herrera – apparently pointlessly – back in April 2007.

I have to say that the heading he gave his letter was rather appropriate in the circumstances.

Malta Today, 29 April 2007/Letters to the Editor

Shameful underlying intents

In his contribution to MaltaToday (22 April) a certain Edwin Grech makes reference to my own contribution to this newspaper in reaction to false allegations regarding Labour MP Dr Jose Herrera, and statements he allegedly made publicly during a televised programme in which I had also participated.

Although I am not a Labour proponent, I felt it only fair to rebut such, since these were totally unfounded, and were maliciously aimed to instil damage in his regard, even though such claims were not attributed to myself or the Nationalist Party.

I also deemed fit to state that Dr Herrera is one of those politicians who certainly deserves to be lauded for his judicious and moderate way of conveying his political views in public.

What is so unusual with such a straightforward statement?

Yet, and for some unknown reason to the undersigned, this fact has infuriated Mr Grech, to the extent that he opted to repeat the same false allegations while finding it fit to add a couple of spiteful remarks.

Dr Herrera certainly does not need me, or anyone, to defend him or his actions. Nonetehless, it would have been more opportune if Mr Grech took the time to spell out his underlying intents, which probably stem from overriding shameful concerns.
