What's the Latin for traitor?
The members of Mr Mintoff’s extensive fan club appear to know neither English nor Maltese, but they do have a smattering of Latin.

Or, as it is more frequently put:
Ad moltos annos perit
Perhaps it’s time we told them that ‘perit’ is also a Latin word. It means, if my distant memory of classes with Horatio Vella and Biagio Vella is not too blurred, ‘he dies’.

I have also been with Horatio Vella at the Univ. and have been lectured by Biagio Vella in the Latin class when preparing for my A level Latin in the 6th Form ( it was me and another student only): I think that the past for the 3rd person is “peruit”.
I might be mistaken, but isn’t “perit” to lose. “Res perit domino” – Something lost to the owner.
“perit” in Latin means to perish.
So Daphne is very close with her definition.
I thought he has already passed away: yes, “perit” is for the present tense.

I found this article from March 1981 online. It’s from Minerva, a social science journal. The article is called “The destruction of the University of Malta”, and it describes Mintoff’s education policies and certain events which occurred during his time.
I tried to post the link on timesofmalta.com, but it was not uploaded.
I am too young to remember those times, and would be interested to hear from anybody who can corroborate what was written. I am particularly interested in the claim that only GWU-selected individuals were allowed into the polytechnic.
This certainly seems to go against the dictum that “Mintoff fetah l-universita’ ghall-kullhadd”.
