It is announced this morning that the cost of voting for a party emblem, for non-members who then automatically become members, is now EUR6.99 and not EUR7 as announced yesterday.

James Piscopo, Labour CEO, has granted a discount of one cent, on the principle used by cheaper supermarkets and chain stores in the United Kingdom: that the brain registers only the digits on the left-hand side of the decimal point and so reacts much more positively to EUR6.99 than it does to EUR7.

But the discount is false. Go to www.mlp.org.mt and check out the details on how to become a member of the Labour Party. It costs EUR5.

Then check out the reports in the non-political newspapers (the Labour Party media aren’t disclosing any facts about expensive SMS votes) and you’ll see that the cost of voting, for members, is EUR1.16.

So even with this one-cent discount, the Labour Party is overcharging you by 83 cents if you become a member/vote by text message.

Jafu kif ukoll.

Your caption is misleading. It implies that Marisa Micallef is actively involved. Surely she can’t be, her English is good.

Labour has always been a generous party. They will take away euro 6.99, but will leave 1 cent in the voter’s pockets, as a Labour subsidy towards the next water and electricity bill.

If it is correct that PL is avoiding any mention of the sms charges to ‘members and non-party members’ who vote their choice of party emblem, then the Department of Consumer Affairs should investigate and compel PL to clearly display said charges and to also clearly state the consequences to ‘non-party members’ of participating in the vote.
